Baseball Splits Doubleheader at Wilmington

Goldey-Beacom closed regular season play in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference with an 11-2 victory at Wilmington after opening the doubleheader with an 11-6 loss at Wilson Field in New Castle, DE.

Goldey-Beacom (27-22, 18-6 CACC) ends second in the CACC South Division and will host third-place Jefferson in the first round of the conference tournament.  The best-of-three series at Doyle Field begins Friday with a doubleheader at noon, followed by a decisive third game Saturday if necessary at 2:00 pm.

The winner of that series heads to the four-team double-elimination portion of the tournament May 12-14 with the champion earning an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.

Goldey-Beacom in the second inning of game two exploded for 10 runs, one week after scoring 11 runs in the first inning vs. University of the Sciences, to open a 10-0 lead.  Freshman Braden Kolmansberger (Lewisberry, PA) homered, sophomore Kyle Walker (Wilmington, DE) and junior Marshall Awtry (Hockessin, DE) each had a two-run double, junior Mason Maxwell (Newfield, NJ) notched an RBI single, freshman Adam McEvoy (Sewell, NJ) and sophomore Demetrius Johnson (Glassboro, NJ) each drew a bases-loaded walk and junior Connor Megginson (Harbeson, DE) was hit by a pitch with the sacks juiced.

Awtry lined an RBI single in the top of the sixth to make it 11-2.

The Lightning once again benefitted from the outstanding pitching of Greentown, PA senior Mitch Guerrieri (6-5), who notched his third complete game of the season and school-record ninth career.  He struck out six over seven innings in getting his sixth victory of the year, establishing a new program high.

Kolmansberger closed with three hits and Awtry amassed three RBI for the Lightning.

Things in game one looked real good early when junior Marlon Lindsey Jr. (Lafayette Hill, PA) cracked a solo homer in the top of the second inning to give the Lightning a 2-1 lead.  It is just the latest in a tear for Lindsey, who during his six-game hitting streak is batting .381 (8-for-21) with five home runs and 10 RBI.

The long ball barrage continued into the third, when Awtry cracked a two-run homer and sophomore Garrett Musey (Millville, NJ) followed with a solo shot to make it 5-1.  Awtry's blast was his 14th homer of the season, extending his own school record, and 26th career.  Musey now has 12 homers on the season and 21 career.

The Wildcats (27-10, 19-5) got an RBI double from Matt Warrington and a sacrifice fly from Quintin Ivy in the third to make it 5-3 before CJ Derry notched a run-scoring single and Warrington lifted a sacrifice fly for a 5-5 tie.

Walker restored order for the Lightning, hitting a leadoff homer in the fifth to make it a 6-5 margin.  But the Wildcats owned the momentum the rest of the way with four runs in the last of the frame, aided by John Mead's two-run double with RBI singles from Derry and Adrian Jimenez later in the frame for a 9-6 margin.

Awtry had three RBI and Walker ended with two hits. Walker is on a career-best 15-game hitting streak, during which he is batting .452 (28-for-62) with six doubles, a home run and 13 RBI.

The victory was the 100th for the program and also head coach Tom Riley since the team's reinstatement beginning with the 2016-17 academic year.  The squad this season in just its fifth full campaign is heading to the CACC Tournament for a third time after playing in the NCAA Tournament a season ago for the first time.

Matt Boyko (5-0) struck out five over six innings with Derry rapping two hits for the Wildcats.

Goldey-Beacom ends the regular season Tuesday at Queens (NY) with a single game beginning at 3:00 pm in Flushing, NY.
