Baseball Handed Tough 10-Inning Loss at Queens (NY)



Goldey-Beacom twice rallied to tie the game that included in the ninth inning, but was dealt a 7-6 loss in the 10th inning by Queens (NY) in Flushing, NY.
 
Down 6-3 entering the ninth, the Lightning (27-23) mounted an incredible rally.  Sophomore Demetrius Johnson (Glassboro, NJ) led off by reaching on an error, took second on a one-out walk to Cole Fowler (Mantua, NJ) and scored on a single from fellow freshman Adam McEvoy (Sewell, NJ) to make it 6-4.
 
Sophomore Kyle Walker (Wilmington, DE) delivered an RBI single that plated Fowler, changing the scoreboard to 6-5, and pinch-runner freshman Jake Vitale (Laurel Springs, NJ) took third on a passed ball.  With two outs, it was up to freshman Braden Kolmansberger (Lewisberry, PA) and he came through with an RBI single that scored Vitale for a 6-6 game.
 
But the Knights (22-14) won it in the last of the 10th.  Marc Cisco drew a leadoff walk, took second when Louis Antos was hit by a pitch and Matt Filip ended it with a long single to right field.
 
Walker rapped three hits, extending his career best hitting streak to 16 games, and the Lightning's pitchers combined for 10 strikeouts with sophomore Justin Jump (Wilmington, DE) notching three.
 
Cisco had three RBI, Filip and Colin Diez recorded two hits apiece and the Knights' pitchers amassed 14 strikeouts.
 
Queens grabbed a 2-0 lead in the last of the first inning when Cisco cracked a two-run homer and then made it 3-0 in the second when Nick Barreiros crossed home on a passed ball.
 
The Lightning struck back with two runs in the third.  McEvoy in the third inning drew a one-walk walk, Walker singled him to second, both advanced on a wild pitch and both scored on a single from junior Marshall Awtry (Hockessin, DE) for a 3-2 deficit.
 
GBC then leveled things, 3-3, in the fifth.  McEvoy again induced a one-out walk, Walker singled him to third and scored when Kolmansberger lifted a sacrifice fly.
 
But the Knights regained the lead, 4-3, in the seventh.  Diez singled, stole second, took third on a wild pitch and scored when Reed Hoskins hit a sacrifice fly to center field.
 
Queens got two more insurance markers in the eighth with Joe Leone scoring on a wild pitch and Cisco adding a sacrifice fly for a 6-3 game.
 
Goldey-Beacom on Friday hosts Jefferson in games one and two of its first-round series in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament.  First pitch at Doyle Field in Hockessin, DE in at noon.
