Baseball Cruises in Doubleheader Sweep at Nyack

Goldey-Beacom took control of game one with a sixth-inning barrage and in game two equaled the school record for runs in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader sweep, 13-4 and 20-3, of Nyack in Jersey City, NJ.

Goldey-Beacom in the top of the sixth inning in game one plated seven runs to open an 11-4 lead.  Juniors Connor Megginson (Harbeson, DE) and Mason Maxwell (Newfield, NJ) each had a two-run single, freshman Braden Kolmansberger (Lewisberry, PA) and sophomore Kyle Walker (Wilmington, DE) notched a run-scoring hit and freshman Cole Fowler (Mantua, NJ) drove one home on a fielder's choice.

Megginson lined an RBI double in the seventh and Walker lifted a sacrifice fly later in the frame for the final.

Maxwell and Megginson each had two hits and three RBI, Walker notched two and two with sophomore Garrett Musey (Millville, NJ) adding two hits.  Freshman Wyatt Atkinson (Moorestown, NJ) struck out three over 4 1/3 innings before Lincoln U., PA sophomore Karl Schmidt (2-0) got the final two outs of the fifth for the win.

Eric Bittiger recorded two hits for the Warriors (0-27, 0-23 CACC).

Game two saw another seven spot for the Lightning, this time in the top of the third for an 8-2 lead.  Megginson recorded an RBI single and junior Marlon Lindsey Jr. (Lafayette Hill, PA) notched a sacrifice fly as part of the frame in which the visitors were aided by five errors.

Lindsey crushed a two-run homer in the fourth and Megginson added an RBI double later in the inning for an 11-2 game.  Junior Johnny Kampes (Colora, MD) launched a two-run homer in the fifth, his sixth long ball of the season, for an 11-run margin.

As if that was not enough, five more runs scored for GBC in the sixth for an 18-2 game.  Sophomore Michael Baginski (Millville, NJ) drew a bases-loaded walk, freshman Nick Harkins (Newark, DE) had an RBI single and Fowler notched a two-run, ground-rule double.

Freshman Jack Vitale (Laurel Springs, NJ) lined an RBI single and Harkins recorded a sacrifice fly in the seventh for the final.

The 20 runs matches the school record set April 29, 2021 against University of the Sciences.

Megginson had two hits and Lindsey closed with three RBI.  Sewickley, PA freshman Logan McNelis (5-1) struck out two over four innings, allowing just two unearned runs and seven hits before the bullpen combined for six strikeouts over the final three frames.

Goldey-Beacom (26-21, 17-5) remains one game behind Wilmington (26-9, 18-4) for first place in the CACC South Division and a first-round bye in the conference tournament.  The teams play a doubleheader Sunday in New Castle, beginning at noon. with the Lightning needing two victories for the division crown and the Wildcats requiring just one.
