Baseball Completes Two-Game Sweep of Chestnut Hill

A brief rain shower did not stop the Goldey-Beacom Lightning, who sought redemption from a mid-week matchup against Chestnut Hill College by completing a two-game sweep, 15-9 and 12-5, in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader at Doyle Field in Hockessin, DE.

In game one, Goldey-Beacom took a 2-0 lead in the first inning capitalizing on an error by the catcher that scored sophomore Garret Musey (Millville, N.J.) and a single up the middle from junior Connor Megginson (Harbeson, Del.) to plate junior Johnny Kampes (Colora, MD.).

Chestnut Hill tied the game in the second inning, 2-2, after a single by John Contoudis to score Nate O'Donnell.

The Lightning regained the lead, 3-2, in the same inning after a double play, scored junior Marlon Lindsey Jr. (Lafayette Hill, PA.).

The Griffins gained a 4-3 lead in the fourth inning on a two-run home run to left center by Ian Labrador.

A home run to left center by Lindsey, however, tied the game once more, 4-4. The Lightning took the lead once more on a single to second base by junior Mason Maxwell (Newfield, N.J.) scored sophomore Demetrius Johnson (Glassboro, N.J.), 5-4.

In the sixth inning, the Griffins tied the game on a ground out to second base scoring Greg Sylvester, 5-5.

The Lightning added a pair of runs in the sixth inning and the Griffins added their own pair of runs to tie the game, 7-7, as R.J. Huth homered to left field scoring Andrew Dietz.

Goldey-Beacom dominated in the eighth inning, capitalizing on fielding errors, to score Kampes and sophomore Kyle Walker (Wilmington, Del.) to extend the lead 11-7. A pair of home runs, to left field by Johnson to score Lindsey and to right center by Maxwell, lifted the lead 15-7.

Chestnut Hill cut into the lead with two runs in the ninth inning on a home run to left field by Contoudis and a ground out to the shortstop that scored Connor Evans, 15-9, but it was not enough to stop the Lightning game one victory.

Maxwell, Kampes, Megginson and Johnson each recorded two RBI. Maxwell and Johnson three hits, Kampes and Lindsey two hits.

Freshman Tyler Hayden (Elkton, MD.) recorded the win (2-1), striking out three. Senior Trevor Jump (Wilmington, Del.) added four strikeouts and sophomore Luke Taylor (Souderton, PA.) added three for the Lightning.

In game two, the Lightning took a 4-0 lead in the first inning capped by a single through left center by freshman Braden Kolmansberger (Lewisberry, PA.), scored Musey and Kampes.

Chestnut Hill tied the game in the third inning after a single through left center by Evans scored Sam Barletta, 4-4.

A huge fourth inning burst by the Lightning ensued as a grand slam by Musey extended the lead 10-4.

Two more runs in the same inning by the Lightning further exhausted the Griffins as a wild pitch scored Walker followed by a double to left field by Lindsay, scored Megginson, 12-4.

One final run by the Griffins in the seventh inning on a ground out to the second baseman, scored Barletta, but was not enough in the final 12-5 Lightning sweep.

Musey two hits and recoreded six RBI for the second time this  season. Kampes and Kolmansberger each two RBI.

Freshman Logan McNelis (Sewickley, PA.) secured the win (3-1), striking out two for the Lightning (14-18, 5-2 CACC).

Goldey-Beacom hosts Jefferson on Tuesday in a single game matchup starting at 2pm.
