Baseball’s Bats Explode in Doubleheader Sweep vs. University of the Sciences

Goldey-Beacom went on a tear with 31 runs and 30 hits in getting a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader sweep vs. University of the Sciences, 12-2 and 19-9, at Doyle Field in Hockessin, DE.

Game one was highlighted by junior Connor Megginson (Harbeson, DE) and sophomore Garrett Musey (Millville, NJ) each hitting two-run homers, junior Mason Maxwell (Newfield, NJ) clubbing a three-run blast and junior Marshall Awtry (Hockessin, DE) getting a solo shot.  Sophomore Michael Baginski (Millville, NJ) lifted a sacrifice fly, Megginson added a two-run single in the seventh and Maxwell ended the game via run rule with an RBI single.

Maxwell and Megginson each closed with three hits and four RBI.  Freshman Tyler Hayden (Elkton, MD) got the win in relief, striking out four over 3 1/3 innings.

Game two saw the Lightning score an astounding 11 runs in the last of the first inning for an 11-3 lead.  Freshmen Adam McEvoy (Sewell, NJ) and Braden Kolmansberger (Lewisberry, PA) each had a two-run single in the frame with Awtry and sophomore Kyle Walker (Wilmington, DE) each getting an RBI single.

Goldey-Beacom made it 18-7 in fourth inning courtesy of five runs, highlighted by junior Marlon Lindsey Jr. (Lafayette Hill, PA) hitting a grand slam.

Kolmansberger joined Lindsey with four RBI, lifting Goldey-Beacom to a new school record with 19 RBI.  Walker and McEvoy each ended with a career-best four hits.

Lincoln U., PA sophomore Karl Schmidt (1-0) was called out of the bullpen and got his first collegiate win, striking out two over two innings.

Eddie Parry hit a three-run homer in the first inning for the Devils (14-28, 8-14 CACC) and Vince Cammisa added a two-run shot in the seventh.

Awtry extended his school-record hitting streak to 22 games and his 12th home run this season breaks the mark of 11 Maxwell set last year.  The 58 hits this season for Maxwell is a new school record, topping the mark of 54 set by Justin Hill in 2019.  Musey bolstered his existing team mark of RBI to 46.

Goldey-Beacom (23-21, 14-5) also notched its 23rd victory, breaking the mark of 22 set last season when the squad won the CACC South Division and advanced to the NCAA Tournament.  The team also extended its school-record home winning streak to 15.

GBC remains two game behind Wilmington (16-3) for first place in the CACC South Division and a first-round bye in the CACC Tournament that comes with it.

Goldey-Beacom is home Wednesday against Wilmington, beginning at 2:00 pm.
