Baseball Splits Two Games at Caldwell

Goldey-Beacom opened its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader at Caldwell with a 5-1 victory before it was dealt a 14-3 loss in Caldwell, NJ.

The Lightning in game one continued its red-hot hitting, getting back-to-back home runs from junior Marshall Awtry (Hockessin, DE) and sophomore Garrett Musey (Millville, NJ) in the top of the first inning for a 2-0 lead.  The margin grew to 4-0 in the second with Demetrius Johnson (Glassboro, NJ) getting an RBI single and fellow sophomore Kyle Walker (Wilmington, DE) recording a run-scoring double.

Walker added an RBI single in the fourth for a 5-0 margin before Ryan Opak homered in the last of the frame for the Cougars' only run.

Derwood, MD senior Jake Heskett (4-4) again had a masterful performance on the mound, striking out five over seven innings and permitting just one run and two hits.  It was his second complete game of the year and the Lightning's fifth.

Opak had his squad's only two hits.

The Cougars in game two got four runs in the last of the first inning to open the scoring.  Kyle Richards, Noah Putney and Liam James all had RBI singles.

Santo Anzalone made it 6-0 in the second with a two-run double.

The Lightning got one back in the top of the third for a 6-1 deficit.  Awtry doubled to extend his school-record hitting streak to 20 games and junior Johnny Kampes (Colora, MD) drove him home with an RBI single.

Trailing 7-1 going to the fifth, the Lightning got two more runs back on Awtry's second homer of the day and Johnson's RBI single.  It was Awtry's 11th home run of the year, tying the GBC single-season record set last year by junior Mason Maxwell (Newfield, NJ).

The Cougars got two runs in the fifth on Frank Lehmann's two-run double for a 9-3 margin before they plated five in the sixth for the final.

Awtry had two hits and freshman Wyatt Atkinson (Moorestown, NJ) notched three strikeouts out of the bullpen for the Lightning.

Lehmann and James posted three hits apiece with Anzalone recording four RBI.  Brandon Scalisi struck out four over five innings for the Cougars (12-21, 7-13 CACC).

Goldey-Beacom (21-21, 12-5) remains second in the CACC South Division, two games behind Wilmington (14-3) for a first-round bye in the conference tournament.

Goldey-Beacom is home Sunday on Senior Day for a CACC South Division doubleheader against University of the Sciences.  First pitch is at noon.
