Baseball Wins Fifth Straight, 13-8 at University of the Sciences

Goldey-Beacom fought off a challenge from University of the Sciences before pulling away late for a 13-8 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory at Richie Ashburn Field in Philadelphia, PA.

Goldey-Beacom in the top of the first grabbed a 3-0 lead thanks to an RBI single from sophomore Garrett Musey (Millville, NJ) and a two-run single from freshman Braden Kolmansberger (Lewisberry, PA).  That margin grew to 5-0 in the third when Kolmansberger was at it again, getting a two-run double to right-center field.

It stayed that way until the last of the sixth, when the Devils put up a seven spot to open a 7-5 lead.  Frank Pollock blasted a two-run homer to stoke the rally and AJ Pena gave his squad the lead with a three-run long ball.

Musey then came to the Lightning's rescue in the top of the seventh, crushing a two-run homer to left field for a 7-7 tie.  It was his ninth long ball of the season, matching last year's total in a campaign which he was tabbed CACC Rookie of the Year.

It was on to the eighth, when Goldey-Beacom's top of the lineup reasserted itself.  After junior Connor Megginson (Harbeson, DE) was hit by a pitch and sacrificed to second by sophomore Kyle Walker (Wilmington, DE), junior Mason Maxwell (Newfield, NJ) lined an RBI single for an 8-7 lead.  Junior Marshall Awtry (Hockessin, DE) following with a run-scoring double to make it a two-run margin.

USciences cut it to 9-8 in the eighth before Goldey-Beacom responded with four runs in the ninth for the final.  Walker lined an RBI single, Maxwell followed with a two-run single and Awtry followed with a run-scoring single.

Awtry closed with a career-best four hits and extending his own school-record hitting streak to 18 games.  Maxwell had three hits and three RBI, Walker ended with three hits, Kolmansberger totaled a career-best four RBI and Musey had three.

Junior Anthony DiMartino (Sicklerville, NJ) struck out six over 5 1/3 innings before the bullpen notched six strikeouts over the last 3 2/3 frames.  Hockessin, DE junior Michael Awtry (1-2) got the win after notching two strikeouts over two innings.

Pollock ended with three hits for the Devils (14-24, 8-10 CACC)

Goldey-Beacom (20-20, 11-4) remains two games behind Wilmington (13-2) for first place in the CACC South Division.  Each of the two division champions receive a bye into the four-team, double-elimination portion of the conference tournament.

Goldey-Beacom on Saturday is back on the road to visit Caldwell for a 2:00 pm doubleheader.
