Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball Records Huge Sweep of Felician

Two perennial powers in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference took to the diamond at Doyle Field and it was Goldey-Beacom which exited with a pair of victories, 5-4 and 7-3 over Felician in Hockessin, DE.

Game one once again bore witness to the outstanding pitching of senior Jake Heskett (Derwood, MD), who continued to shine as Goldey-Beacom's ace.  He struck out two over five innings before giving way to sophomore Justin Jump (Wilmington, DE), who struck out four over two innings for his first save.

The Golden Falcons jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first inning on a two-run homer from Luis De La Cruz and a solo shot from Dauri Genoa.  But the Lightning got two back in the last of the second as freshman Braden Kolmansberger (Lewisberry, PA) lined an RBI single and sophomore Demetrius Johnson (Glassboro, NJ) added a run-scoring double.

Junior Marshall Awtry (Hockessin, DE) then continued his hitting attack in the third, blasting a solo homer for a 3-3 tie.

Genoa launched another solo blast in the fourth for a 4-3 lead before GBC responded in the last of the frame.  Junior Marlon Lindsey Jr. (Lafayette Hill, PA) cracked a solo blast for his second homer of the year and Johnson, who ended the game 2-for-2, followed with his first long ball of the season.

Genao had two hits with Wilfrido Valenzuela striking out six over five innings for the Golden Falcons.

De La Cruz in game two also hit a two-run homer in the opening frame, giving his squad a 2-0 lead.

However, the Lightning struck back with three in the third.  Awtry blasted a two-run shot for his team-leading sixth long ball of the season and 18th career to make it 2-2 and a dropped fly ball allowed junior Johnny Kampes (Colora, MD) to score for a 3-2 game.

Three more runs for GBC (12-18, 3-2 CACC) in the fourth made it a 6-2 contest as junior Mason Maxwell (Newfield, NJ) ripped an RBI single and Kampes lined a two-run single.

Senior Mitch Guerrieri (Greentown, PA) again pitched great, striking out four and allowing just two runs and five hits over five innings.  Sophomore Karl Schmidt (Lincoln U., PA) and junior Michael Awtry (Hockessin, DE) combined for three strikeouts over two relief frames.

Maxwell went 4-for-4, marking the second time this season he has recorded four hits, and Kolmansberger went a season-best 3-for-3.

Michael Kuver and Edwin Tavarez each had two hits for Felician (8-14, 3-3) and Ralph Gambino struck out four over 3 2/3 innings.

Goldey-Beacom on Sunday is home against Chestnut Hill for a noon doubleheader in Hockessin, DE.
