Baseball Completes Sweep over Bloomfield; Marshall Awtry Extends Hitting Streak to 17

Goldey-Beacom grabbed a pair of wins, 4-3 and 13-6, over Bloomfield College in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference matchup at Doyle Field in Hockessin, DE.

Goldey-Beacom set the tone early in game one after a first-inning, two-run homer to left field by junior Marshall Awtry (Hockessin, Del.) also scored junior Mason Maxwell (Newfield, N.J.) for a 2-0 lead.

Bloomfield took a 3-2 lead in the fifth inning after a double to left center by Luis Ramirez, scored Christopher Walker and Javell Barnes.

The Lightning were not done yet as a sixth-inning single deep into left field by  junior Marlon Lindsey Jr. (Lafayette Hill, PA.) for two RBI, scored freshman Jake Vitale (Laurel Springs, N.J.) and junior Johnny Kampes (Colora, MD.) for the 4-3 victory.

Senior Jake Heskett (Derwood, MD.) recorded the win (3-4), striking out three. Senior Trevor Jump (Wilmington, Del.) was credited with the save, striking out two for the Lightning.

Bryan Guzman pitched for the Bears, striking out seven.

In game two, each team put up a single run in the first inning 1-1. Goldey-Beacom got going on the second inning, adding five runs to take a 6-1 lead capped by junior Connor Megginson (Harbeson, Del.) scoring off a wild pitch.

The Bears put up a run in the third inning after a reach on a dropped fly to center field, sacrifice fly by Jonas Espinal that scored Ramirez for a 6-2 game. The Lightning added a pair of runs in the fourth inning to extend the lead to 8-2.

Bloomfield chipped into the lead with three runs in the fifth inning capped by a single to center field by Justin Sanchez to score Espinal, 8-5.

Goldey-Beacom was not done yet as a single, advanced to second on a fielding error for Megginson, scored freshman Braden Kolmansberger (Lewisberry, PA.) and sophomore Demetrius Johnson (Glassboro, N.J.), 10-5.

In the sixth inning, the Bears added one final run off a single to the shortstop by Justin Sanchez scored Barnes, 10-6. The Lightning stamped the victory with three more runs capped by a fly out to left field by Johnson to score Kampes to complete the two game sweep, 13-6.

Kolmansberger went 3-for-3 with a pair of RBI. Megginson had two hits and four RBI with Maxwell getting a pair of hits.

Senior Mitch Guerrieri (Greentown, PA.) recorded the win (5-4), striking out two. Sophomore Justin Jump (Wilmington, Del.) a pair of strikeouts for the Lightning (19-20, 10-4 CACC).

Awtry's singled in his final at-bat of game two, extending his hitting streak to a new-school-record 17 games.  The previous mark of 16 was established by Brandon Abdul in 2019.

Player comments after today's sweep of Bloomfield:

Marlon Lindsey Jr. game one remarks after his two-run single in the sixth inning to take the lead, "I was just staying confident and trying to put the ball in play, hit it hard and help my team."

Jake Vitale on pinch running and scoring the game winning run for the Lightning in game one, "I just wanted to get in a scoring position for Marlon and be able to score a run, we end up getting two and we got the win so a great day."

Connor Megginson post game thoughts after his four RBI in game two to get the win over Bloomfield in game two, "There were runners on and I was just trying to do my job and put the ball in play and that's what I did got a pitch I can hit, drove it back right up the middle and we got it going."

Braden Kolmansberger after three hits and reaching base four times in game two, "I felt really good going into the games today talked a lot with Coach (Matt) Trate and I worked a lot with Nick Harkins and Marlon Lindsey and those two guys gave me a lot of confidence too so it was a good day, felt really good to play and I'm glad I could help my team out."

Goldey-Beacom is back in action on Tuesday as the team heads to Philadelphia, PA to face University of the Sciences in a single game contest starting at 2:00 pm.
