Baseball Records Get Some Fine Tuning in Doubleheader Sweep of Dominican (NY)

Goldey-Beacom saw two new single-season program records set and made it victories in seven of its last nine contests with a doubleheader sweep, 11-2 and 4-3, of Dominican (NY) at Doyle Field in Hockessin, DE.

The first record to go came courtesy of sophomore Garrett Musey (Millville, NJ), who in the first inning of game one lined an RBI single for a 1-0 lead.  It was his 36th RBI of the season, breaking the mark set last year by junior Mason Maxwell (Newfield, NJ), and he now stands at 38.

Johnny Kampes (Colora, MD) added a run-scoring fielder's choice later in the frame before fellow junior Marshall Awtry (Hockessin, DE) drew a bases-loaded walk in the second and Musey lifted a sacrifice fly for a 4-0 margin.

Junior Marlon Lindsey Jr. (Lafayette Hill, PA) laced a two-run double down the left-field line in the fourth for a 6-1 GBC margin.

It was a 6-2 contest entering the last of the fifth before the Lightning (17-20, 8-4 CACC) tacked on five more runs.  Junior Connor Megginson (Harbeson, DE) had an RBI double, Awtry crushed a three-run homer and Musey on the next pitch blasted one over the left-field wall.

Awtry's long ball was his career-best eighth of the season and school-record 20th career.  Musey's was his eighth this season and 17th career.  The GBC single-season mark is 11, set last year by Maxwell.

Sicklerville, NJ junior Anthony DiMartino (3-3) struck out a season-best eight, one short of personal best, over seven innings in allowing just two runs – one earned – for his first complete game of the year.

Musey ended 3-for-3 with Awtry getting two hits and four RBI.  Megginson and sophomore Kyle Walker (Wilmington, DE) also had two hits.

Richard Paulino and Bobby Garbuio notched two hits apiece for the Chargers (10-23, 7-7).

GBC in game two plated three runs in the last of the second, courtesy of Kampes' fifth home run of the year to go with two wild pitches that allowed runners to score.  Walker added what proved to be a huge insurance run in the third, singling home Awtry for a 4-0 margin.

Freshman starter Logan McNelis (Sewickley, PA) was perfect through the first three innings, but Garbuio crushed a three-run homer in the fourth to make it a one-run contest.

The Lightning's bullpen took over with freshman Tommy Federici (Swoyersville, PA), who joined Musey on this week's CACC Weekly Honor Roll, striking out four over 1 1/3 innings and junior Michael Awtry (Hockessin, DE) getting a strikeout in the seventh for the save.

For Michael Awtry, it was his school-record third save of the year and his three career saves ties Carlos Solis (2019-20) for the program's top mark.

Marshall Awtry had a hit and now is riding a 15-game hitting streak, one short of the program record set in 2019 by Brandon Abdul.  Megginson and Walker in game two again had two hits apiece.

Andrew Alcantara struck out six over 2 2/3 innings for Dominican.

Goldey-Beacom is home Friday against Bloomfield for a make-up doubleheader, beginning at noon.
