A game-two comeback surge ensued for the Lightning that forced the game into 12 innings, but it was not enough told gain the split as Goldey-Beacom faced a pair of losses, 9-3 and 7-6, to Jefferson in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference matchup in Philadelphia, PA.
The Lightning tied game two in the seventh inning on a two-out solo home run to right field by junior Mason Maxwell (Newfield, N.J.) to make it 3-3.
Goldey-Beacom took the lead in the 10th inning after a sacrifice fly to center field by junior Johnny Kampes (Colora, MD.), scored Maxwell, 4-3. Jefferson responded with a two-out game tying run of its own in the same inning with homer to left field by Lucas DeStefano, 4-4.
A big 12th inning followed as the Lightning added a pair of runs to extend the lead with a single up the middle by sophomore Garrett Musey (Millville, N.J.), scoring Maxwell once more, 5-4, followed by a fly out to center field by sophomore Kyle Walker (Wilmington, Del.), to score freshman Jake Vitale (Laurel Spring, N.J.), 6-4.
Jefferson capitalized on a fielding error off a base hit single to center field by Ryan Sawyer that scored Alex Gonzalez. 6-5. A single through the right side by DeStefano scored Sawyer to tie the game, 6-6.
The Rams sealed the win after a double to center field by Zack Austin, scored DeStefano for the final 7-6 victory.
Musey three hits and three RBI. His 35 RBI on the season now ties him for the program's single-season mark, set last season by Maxwell.
This was tied for the second-longest game in program history. The longest was a 13-inning battle in 2018 between these schools on the same field in East Falls.
Sophomore Luke Taylor (0-2) pitched for 1 2/3 innings with three strikeouts for the Lightning. Senior Mitch Guerrieri (Greentown, PA.) struck out four. From the bullpen, freshman Tommy Federici threw two innings for three strikeouts and junior Michael Awtry (Hockessin, Del.) pitched 2 2/3 innings, striking out three in the effort.
In game one, Jefferson took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on a homer to left field from Efrain Santiago.
Goldey-Beacom put up a run in the fourth inning after a home run to left center from Kampes, cut into the lead 2-1.
The Rams extended their lead to 9-1 by the eighth inning capped by a home run to left center for a pair of RBI by Sawyer that scored Gonzalez.
The Lightning added two runs in the ninth inning as a single through the right side by freshman Cole Fowler (Mantua, N.J.) scored junior Connor Megginson (Newfield, N.J.),9-2, followed by a bases loaded walk of Musey, scoring freshman Matt Benner (Souderton, PA.), in the final 9-3 defeat.
Fowler recorded three hits. Musey added two hits.
Senior Jake Heskett (Derwood, MD.) pitched four innings (2-4), striking out seven for the Lightning (15-20, 6-4 CACC).
Samuel Bass thew six innings for the Rams, striking out nine for the win.
Goldey-Beacom hosts Dominican (NY.) College on Wednesday in a CACC doubleheader starting at noon.
