Baseball Drops Two at Millersville

Goldey-Beacom has faced some of the nation's elite in the early campaign and today was no exception in a pair of defeats, 8-6 and 7-0, at Millersville in Millersville, PA.

Goldey-Beacom in game one grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Johnny Kampes (Colora, MD) laced an RBI single that plated fellow junior Marshall Awtry (Hockessin, DE).  Millersville got it back in the second when Luke Trainer hit a leadoff homer and grabbed a 5-1 cushion in the third on Thomas Caufield's grand slam.

The Lightning then got a four spot of their own in the fourth for a 5-5 tie.  Sophomore Kyle Walker (Wilmington, DE) drew a bases-loaded walk and Kampes wiped the bases clean with a three-run double.

Caufield's two-run single in the fifth gave the Marauders a 7-5 lead before the Lightning got one back in the sixth.  Two unintentional walks and one on purpose following Walker's sacrifice bunt loaded the bases before freshman Cole Fowler (Mantua, NJ) drew his own walk.

Millersville restored the two-run margin when Jimmy Kirk launched a solo homer for the final.

Kampes ended 3-for-3 with four RBI, junior Connor Megginson (Harbeson, DE) rapped two hits with senior Jake Heskett (Derwood, MD) and sophomore Luke Taylor (Souderton, PA) each striking out two on the bump for GBC.

Caufield amassed six RBI, Christian Wingard (1-0) struck out five over 2 1/3 frames for the win and Sam Morris fanned two in the seventh for the save.

The Marauders in game two plated three runs in the second for a 4-0 lead, highlighted by Cole Houser's leadoff home run.  Trainer smashed a two-run homer in the fourth for a 6-0 margin and Caufield added an RBI single in the sixth for the final.

Sophomore Justin Jump (Wilmington, DE) struck out four over three relief innings for Goldey-Beacom (3-11) with junior Anthony DiMartino (Sicklerville, NJ) getting two strikeouts.

Ben Wilchacky (4-0) struck out six over seven innings in tossing a one-hit shutout for the Marauders (7-4).

The teams on Sunday will play another doubleheader, this time at Doyle Field in Hockessin, DE.  First pitch is at noon.
