Baseball Handed 2-1 Walk-Off Loss at Chestnut Hill

Goldey-Beacom faced its first test of the year against a fellow club from the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference South Division, but surrendered a game-winning single in the last of the ninth inning for a tough 2-1 loss at Chestnut Hill in North Wales, PA.

The Griffins opened the scoring in the last of the first inning.  John Contoudis ripped a two-out double and Andrew Dietz followed with an RBI double to right-center field.

The Lightning began to chip away and cashed in during the top of the fourth for a 1-1 tie.  Junior Marshall Awtry (Hockessin, DE) reached on a one-out infield single and crossed home when sophomore Garrett Musey (Millville, NJ) ripped an RBI double.

The pitchers duel reached the eighth inning still tied when Goldey-Beacom junior starter Anthony DiMartino (Sicklerville, NJ) worked his way out of a jam.  Chestnut Hill had the go-ahead runner at second base with two out before DiMartino got Contoudis to fly out and retire the side.

But the Griffins found a way in the ninth.  Dietz stroked a leadoff double, took third on a groundout from Connor Evans and scored on Ian Labrador's single through the left side.

DiMartino pitched great in a tough no-decision, striking out four over eight innings and allowing just one run and six hits.  Musey rapped three hits for the third time this season and seventh overall, matching his career best for GBC (10-18, 1-2 CACC).

Dietz ended with three hits and Michael Kiefer struck out five over five innings in a no-decision for the Griffins (12-12, 4-2).

These teams will battle again Sunday in a noon doubleheader at Doyle Field.  Before that, Goldey-Beacom is home Saturday against Felician for a noon doubleheader.
