Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball Splits CACC Opener at Post

Goldey-Beacom exploded for six runs in the sixth inning of game two, buoying it in gaining a split at Post with an 11-2 victory that followed a 5-4 loss in its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference opener in Waterbury, CT.

Junior Johnny Kampes (Colora, MD) in game two was the catalyst with a first-inning RBI double and sophomore Kyle Walker (Wilmington, DE) added a run-scoring single in the third for a 2-0 lead.  Kampes then continued his scorching-hot March with a two-run homer in the fifth that made it 4-0.

Kampes this month is batting .432 (19-for-44) with eight doubles, two home runs and 18 RBI.

The Eagles got one back in the last of the fifth before the Lightning took control in the sixth for a 10-1 lead.  Junior Marshall Awtry (Hockessin, DE) had the key blow with a three-run homer, Kampes crossed home on a wild pitch, junior Connor Megginson (Harbeson, DE) recorded an RBI groundout and an error allowed freshman Braden Kolmansberger (Lewisberry, PA) to score.

Awtry added a run-scoring double in the seventh to give him four RBI, matching his career best from May 2, 2021 against Wilmington.  His three hits also equals a personal best accomplished multiple times and he became the third player in program history to reach 100 career hits, joining teammate Mason Maxwell (Newfield, NJ) and former teammate Justin Hill.

Kampes had two hits and three RBI with Walker also getting two hits.  Greentown, PA senior Mitch Guerrieri (3-4) struck out six over seven innings, allowing two runs – one earned – and six hits over seven innings for his school-record eighth career complete game.

Nico Gaudio (0-4) struck out 10 over five innings, but yielded four runs and seven hits for Post.

Kampes in game one put GBC ahead with a first-inning sacrifice fly.  But Post notched two runs in the last of the frame before Robert Olah cracked a three-run homer in the third for a 5-1 margin.

The Lightning got a two-run homer from sophomore Garrett Musey (Millville, NJ) in the fifth and an RBI single from Kampes in the seventh for a 5-4 margin, but could get no closer.

Senior Jake Heskett (Derwood, MD) again pitched great for Goldey-Beacom, striking out seven over six innings.  It is the seventh time he has notched seven strikeouts, a career best.

Musey notched two hits and two RBI with Awtry also getting two hits for the Lightning (10-17, 1-1 CACC).

Joe Christiana struck out seven over five innings with Hunter Keller getting two hits for the Eagles (6-16, 2-1).

Goldey-Beacom on Wednesday visits Chestnut Hill for a single game in the CACC South Division.  Game time in North Wales, PA is at 4:00 pm.
