Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball Gains Doubleheader Split at Pace

Sophomore Adam Slavin (Earleville, MD) hit the go-ahead, two-run homer in the sixth inning, junior Mason Maxwell (Newfield, NJ) also went deep with a solo blast and Goldey-Beacom saw its pitching staff get the job done in a 3-2 victory over Pace that followed a 14-12 setback in the opener in Pleasantville, NY.

Maxwell in the third inning of game two was up to his old tricks by swatting a two-out homer to give the Lightning a 1-0 lead.  It is his third long ball of the season and extends his own school record to 17 career.

Mitchell McCabe then came to the rescue for the Setters (7-6), getting an RBI double in the last of the third to tie things and another RBI double in the fifth that provided a 2-1 lead.

But the Lightning (9-16) had an answer in the sixth.  Junior Marshall Awtry (Hockessin, DE) had a one-out infield single and Slavin followed with his blast for his first collegiate home run.

Sewickley, PA freshman Logan McNelis (2-1) got the victory with another strong outing, allowing just two runs over 5 2/3 innings.  Junior Michael Awtry (Hockessin, DE) got the last four outs for his second save of the year.

McCabe had three hits with Patrick Gleason (1-2) recording seven strikeouts over seven innings.

The shootout in game one saw Maxwell close with four hits to equal his career high and end just a double short of the cycle, which included a two-run homer in the ninth that made things interesting.  Sophomore Garrett Musey (Millville, NJ) had three hits, a two-run homer and a two-run single with Marshall Awtry also cracking a two-run homer.

Junior Johnny Kampes (Colora, MD) amassed two hits for his sixth multi-hit game of the season.

Goldey-Beacom on Saturday opens play in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference with a doubleheader at Post, beginning at noon.
