Baseball Notches Doubleheader Sweep of Staten Island

Goldey-Beacom once again received great overall play and extended its winning streak to four games with a doubleheader sweep, 5-4 and 10-2, against Staten Island at Doyle Field in Hockessin, DE.

Game one saw the Lightning gain an early 1-0 lead when junior Johnny Kampes (Colora, MD) lifted a sacrifice fly that plated junior Mason Maxwell (Newfield, NJ).  But the Dolphins grabbed their only lead in the fourth when Shendi Ulaj hit a two-run homer to center field for a 2-1 margin.

However, Goldey-Beacom responded via a thunderous way in the last of the fourth as sophomore Kyle Walker (Wilmington, DE) crushed a two-run homer to left for his second career long ball and a 3-2 lead.  The Lightning were not done as two more runs crossed home in the fifth, courtesy of an RBI double from Garrett Musey (Millville, NJ) and Kampes' run-scoring single for a 5-2 margin.

CSI closed to 5-4 in the sixth when Ulaj had an RBI groundout and Nick Cippoletti added a run-scoring triple.  But that was as close as it would get with junior Michael Awtry (Hockessin, DE) pitching a scoreless seventh inning for his first save with the Navy Blue and Vegas Gold.

The story for Goldey-Beacom's pitching was Jake Heskett (Derwood, MD), who again pitched great in striking out four over six innings for his eighth career victory.  Kampes and Walker each had two hits and two RBI apiece with freshman Braden Kolmansberger (Lewisberry, PA) also getting two hits.

The Lightning in game two were on their way with four runs in the last of the second inning for a 5-0 lead.  Marlon Lindsey Jr. (Lafayette Hill, PA) recorded an RBI single, fellow junior Marshall Awtry (Hockessin, DE) laced a two-run double and Musey followed with an RBI double.

Kampes continued his prowess at the play with a sacrifice fly in the fourth for a 6-0 margin.  CSI looked to make a game of it with Domenick Castiglione recording an RBI infield single and Cippoletti adding a run-scoring triple in the sixth for a 6-2 contest.

But GBC (8-15) finally put a clamp on things with a four-run sixth inning for the final.  Maxwell scored on a huge passed ball and Kampes wiped the bases clean with a three-run homer.

Kampes is on a five-game hitting streak and this month is batting .452 (14-for-31) over 11 games with six doubles and 12 RBI.

Senior Mitch Guerrieri (Greentown, PA) was solid on the bump in striking out seven over seven innings for his seventh career complete game, extending his own school record, and 10th career win.  Maxwell had two hits in the finale and is riding a seven-game hitting streak with Lindsey Jr. also collecting two hits.

Castiglione and Jake Myers had two hits for the Dolphins (5-7).

Goldey-Beacom on Sunday is back at it with a doubleheader at Pace, beginning at noon in Pleasantville, NY.
