Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball Takes Two From Lincoln (PA)

Goldey-Beacom in game one gutted out a 1-0 victory over Lincoln (PA) before using a nine-run third inning in game two, rolling to a 14-2 triumph at Doyle Field in Hockessin, DE.

Junior Anthony DiMartino (Sicklerville, NJ) found himself locked in a game-one pitchers duel with Gabriel Sanchez and it was the former who found the way.  He struck out seven over six impressive innings and allowed just five hits for his first career shutout.

Sophomore Karl Schmidt (Lincoln U., PA) tossed the seventh, getting a strikeout for his first career save.

DiMartino and Schmidt both were the benefactors of outstanding defense by an experienced GBC lineup.  The Lions in the top of the sixth inning had the tying run on second base with one out, but Miguel Agramonte's liner was caught by junior Connor Megginson (Harbeson, DE) at second and his flip to junior shortstop Mason Maxwell (Newfield, NJ) doubled off Wesley Hogan at second.  The seventh inning saw CarVonte Williams at first base as the tying run, but junior catcher Marshall Awtry (Hockessin, DE) ended that threat by firing to sophomore first baseman Garrett Musey (Millville, NJ) for the pickoff and a big first out that all but ended things.

The Lightning got the lone run in the second inning.  Sophomore Demetrius Johnson (Glassboro, NJ) drew a one-out walk, stole second, reached third on a wild pitch and scored on Megginson's RBI single.

Megginson ended 3-for-3, just shy of his 4-for-4 day February 12 at Lenoir-Rhyne.

Sanchez allowed one run and four hits over five innings with Hilman Truss getting two hits for the Lions (4-14).

Game two saw the third inning close with the Lightning (6-15) owning an 12-2 lead, highlighted by Megginson' two-run single and a two-RBI double from junior Johnny Kampes (Colora, MD).  Megginson also was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and junior Marlon Lindsey Jr. (Lafayette Hill, PA) walked with the sacks juiced.

Maxwell closed with three hits and Awtry had two.  Elkton, MD freshman Tyler Hayden (1-0) got his first collegiate victory, striking out four over 3 2/3 scoreless innings and yielding just one hit.

Goldey-Beacom is home Friday against Staten Island for a noon doubleheader.  Please note this was moved from Saturday due to impending weather.
