Game Recap: Baseball |

Milestone Hit, Go-Ahead Double and Solid Pitching Highlight Baseball’s Doubleheader Split vs. Frostburg State

Junior Mason Maxwell (Newfield, NJ) reached a momentous milestone, sophomore Garrett Musey (Millville, NJ) provided a clutch hit and senior Jake Heskett (Derwood, MD) again was money on the mound in helping Goldey-Beacom notch a 5-4 victory over Frostburg State in game one before an 8-2 setback in the finale at Doyle Field in Hockessin, DE.

Maxwell became the second player in the program's six-year history to reach 100 career hits, joining former teammate Justin Hill.  And it was not just an ordinary hit as his seeing-eye single through the right side in the sixth inning got the Lightning to a 3-1 deficit.

The comeback was just getting started as play moved to the seventh.  Junior Johnny Kampes (Colora, MD) reached on a dropped flyball and moved to second on a bunt single from sophomore Kyle Walker (Wilmington, DE).  Junior Connor Megginson (Harbeson, DE) then got into the act with his own bunt single and a throwing error allowed Kampes to score for a 3-2 game.

The go-ahead runs were now on base, but not for long as two wild pitches chased Walker and Megginson home for the Lightning's first lead at 4-3.

The Bobcats got back into the contest in the top of the eighth when Danny Estrada walked, took second on Bryce Jackson's groundout, reached third on a wild pitch and scored on Trevor Jones' RBI single.

But the Lightning regained the lead in the last of the frame.  Maxwell made it to second base on a dropped flyball and scored when Musey crushed a double off the center field wall.

Heskett again pitched great and deserved better than a no-decision, striking out seven over seven innings and allowing just three runs – two earned – to go with seven hits.  Sewickley, PA freshman Logan McNelis (1-1) got his first collegiate win, striking out three over the final two innings.

Walker ended with two hits.

Game two saw the Bobcats get a solo homer in the third inning from Justin Jimenez and a two-run shot from Jones.  Andrew Smith, who had an RBI double in the first inning, added a two-run double in the seventh before Jack Lawrence got an RBI single for an 8-0 margin.

Goldey-Beacom in the seventh saw Musey crush his 12th career home run and third of the season before junior Marlon Lindsey Jr. (Lafayette Jill, PA) added his first long ball with the Navy Blue and Vegas Gold.

Smith, Jones and Jimenez all had two hits for Frostburg State.

Goldey-Beacom is home Wednesday against Lincoln (PA) for one game, beginning at 2:00 pm.
