Baseball returned home to Doyle Field on Sunday afternoon to face Shippensburg University in a non-conference matchup, falling in the final two games of the series, 2-0 in game one and 10-5 in game two in Hockessin, DE.
In game two, the Raiders took a two-run lead in the first inning after Justin Byler doubled to center field, scoring Justin Darden and Andrew Chronister 2-0. The Lightning responded with a three-run sequence led by junior Marshall Awtry (Hockessin, Del.) who singled through the left side, scoring sophomore Demetrius Johnson (Glassboro, N.J.), 2-1.
A ground out to second base, drove home junior Mason Maxwell (Newfield, N.J.), 2-2. The Lightning then gained the lead after junior Connor Megginson (Harbeson, Del.) singled down the right field line, driving home Awtry for the 3-2 lead.
The Raiders put up three runs of their own in the second inning, a single run in the fourth inning and a monster three-run inning capped by a home run by Darden to exhaust the Lightning, 9-3.
In the seventh inning, Shippensburg's Juju Cason tripled to right center, scoring Carter Hinds to seal to deal. Goldey-Beacom put up a pair of runs to close the gap. With bases loaded, Maxwell was hit by a pitch that scored freshman Braden Kolmansberger (Lewisberry, Pa.), 10-4. A grounded-out double-play then scored freshman Matt Benner (Souderton, Pa.) in the final 10-5 loss.
Johnson, Maxwell, Awtry and Kolmansberger each went 1-for-1at bat.
Sophomore Luke Taylor (Souderton, Pa.) threw four innings striking out four, allowing a single run and walk in the game (0-1).
Noah Nabholz pitched the complete game striking out four, walking three in the win.
In game one, Shippensburg put up two runs in the fourth inning. A fly out to right field, scored Darden ,1-0, followed by a pair of stolen bases, scored Chronister in the final 2-0 victory.
Senior Mitch Guerrieri (Greentown, Pa.) pitched four and two-third innings, striking out four and walking one (1-2).
Gabe Stotler pitched all seven innings, allowing two hits, a pair of walks while striking out eight in the win.
Goldey-Beacom hosts Millersville University on Saturday in a non-conference doubleheader starting at noon.
