No.14 Goldey-Beacom took game one, 5-2, over Mercy College on Saturday afternoon in a non-conference matchup in Cary, NC.
Coming off Saturday's doubleheader sweep over Le Moyne, Goldey-Beacom got the job done in game one of the series.
The Lightning combined for 11 hits on the day. Mason Maxwell (Newfied, NJ), fellow junior Marshall Awtry (Hockessin, DE), junior Johnny Kampes (Colora, MD) and freshman Cole Fowler (Mantua, NJ) each collected two hits for the Lightning (3-4).
Senior Mitch Guerrieri (Greentown, PA.) secured the win, pitching six innings with three strikeouts, allowing only six hits and a pair of runs (1-1).
From the bullpen, freshman Wyatt Atkinson (Moorestown, N.J.) threw for two innings for the save, striking out a pair. Sophomore Tommy Federici (Swoyersville, Pa.) pitched a single inning for the hold.
Down 2-0 entering the top of the fourth, Goldey-Beacom halved the deficit when Awtry laced a leadoff single, took second on a balk, reached third on a wild pitch and scored on sacrifice fly from Connor Megginson (Harbeson, DE).
The Lightning then took the lead for good in the sixth with two runs for a 3-2 margin. Maxwell ripped a leadoff triple and scored on Awtry's single for a tie game. Awtry then took second on a groundout and scored on Fowler's RBI single.
The margin ballooned to 5-2 in the ninth with Johnson getting an RBI double and Awtry contributing a sacrifice fly.
Awtry has a hit in all seven contests this season for a personal-best hitting streak and Maxwell extended his streak to six games. Maxwell's career high is 14 games, accomplished over the final games last season.
