No. 14 Baseball Ends North Carolina Trip With 6-5 Loss to Mercy

Mason Maxwell (Newfield, NJ) had three hits and four RBI with fellow junior Marshall Awtry (Hockessin, DE) extending his career-best hitting streak for No. 14 Goldey-Beacom, which ended its trip to North Carolina with a 6-5 loss to Mercy at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary.

Maxwell's RBI single in the last of the third inning gave Goldey-Beacom a 1-0 lead before Mercy plated the next three runs.  Nolan Giblin lined an RBI triple in the fourth, scored on an error and Nikko Liguori added a run-scoring single in the fifth for a 3-1 margin.

The Lightning closed to 3-2 in the fifth when sophomore Joey Jourdan (Middletown, DE) walked, took second on a single from junior Johnny Kampes (Colora MD), reached third on a walk and crossed home on a passed ball.  The squad then evened things in the seventh, when Kampes got to second on an error, took third on a groundout and scored on Maxwell's single.

Mercy got a run in the eighth when Justin Glennerster scored on a fielder's choice and then plated two in the ninth as Jaden Caballero recorded an RBI single and Robert Wootten drew a bases-loaded walk for a 6-3 game.

The never-say-die Lightning (3-5) have fought back in many games during their brief six-year existence and today was no different.  Sophomore Demetrius Johnson (Glassboro, NJ) in the last of the ninth got a two-out triple and was brought home when Maxwell crushed a two-run blast for a 6-5 game.

It was Maxwell's first homer of the season and 15th career, extending his own school record.  He also is at 92 career hits, looking to join Justin Hill (160) as the only players in team history to reach triple digits.

Awtry followed with a single, but Mercy got a flyout to end it.

Awtry closed with two hits and he has a hit in all eight contests this season.  Maxwell is riding a seven-game streak.

Sophomore Justin Jump (Wilmington, DE) pitched great over six innings, striking out eight and allowing three runs – one earned – and six hits.

Caballero and Giblin each rapped three hits with Wootten getting three RBI.  Jonathan Diforio struck out four over six innings and Kevin Seckler got the victory in relief, striking three over three frames for the Mavericks (2-2).

Goldey-Beacom on Saturday faces Shippensburg in its home opener.  The doubleheader at Doyle Field in Hockessin begins at noon.
