No. 14 Baseball Dominates in Two-Game Sweep over Le Moyne College

No.14 Baseball made its second trip to North Carolina on Friday, completing a doubleheader sweep 4-3, 8-3 over Le Moyne College in a non-conference matchup in Cary, NC.

In game one, the Lightning gained a 1-0 lead in the third inning when CACC Weekly Honor Roll selection Garrett Musey (Millville, N.J.) singled to left field, scoring fellow sophomore Demetrius Johnson (Glassboro, N.J.).

Goldey-Beacom further extended the lead, putting up two more runs in the fifth inning on a sac fly to left field by sophomore Michael Baginski (Millville, N.J.), scoring Johnson once more. A single to center field by sophomore Kyle Walker (Wilmington, Del.), scored junior Mason Maxwell (Newfield, N.J.) for the 3-0 lead.

Le Moyne forged two runs of its own in the sixth inning, tying the ball game at the top of the ninth on a single by Jason Boule, 3-3. Goldey-Beacom snatched the lead in the same inning with a single to left field by junior Marshall Awtry (Hockessin, Del.), scoring freshman Braden Kolmansberger (Lewisberry, PA.) in the 4-3 win.

Senior Trevor Jump (Wilmington, Del.) secured the win as he pitched the final inning striking out one, not allowing a walk or hit in the Lightning.

For Le Moyne, Joe Vail pitched five innings, striking out seven. Relief pitcher Kennen Smith threw three innings, striking out five and Sam DiGeorge pitched to close out the game.

Goldey-Beacom continued its flow in game two, gaining a run in the first inning with double to right center by Awtry to score Maxwell, 1-0. Le Moyne tied the game with a run of its own in the second inning on an error, unearned, 1-1

The Lightning put up four runs in the third inning that was capped by an error by the shortstop, allowing Walker to reach first, scoring freshman Cole Fowler (Mantua, N.J.) and junior Connor Megginson (Harbeson, Del.) both unearned, 5-1.

Le Moyne put up two runs of its own in the third inning (5-3), but it was not enough as Goldey-Beacom added three more runs in the sixth inning.

The Lightning had a field day in the sixth inning as Baginski singled to left field, scoring Kolmansberger (6-3), Maxwell hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring sophomore Adam Slavin (Earleville, MD.) (7-3) and Awtry doubled to left field, scoring Baginski to exhaust the Dolphins in the final 8-3 victory.

A solid team effort fro the Lightning as Maxwell went 2-for-2 at bat recording a single RBI. Kolmansberger, Megginson, Baginski and Slavin each went 1-for-1 at bat. Awtry recorded three RBI in the win.

Freshman Logan McNelis (Sewickley, PA.) gained his first collegiate win, pitching 3 2/3 innings giving up a single hit, one walk and striking out four for the Lightning (2-4).

For Le Moyne, Max Parker pitched three innings striking out four and walking two.

It is a quick turnaround for Goldey-Beacom as it faces Mercy College in a single game matchup. First pitch thrown at 11am.

Thoughts from Demetrius Johnson: "It was a great feeling (to get four hits in game one) and I feel like we are getting in a grove.  Last week, we were a little flat.  Today, we had great energy and it was great to get two Ws."

Thoughts from Logan McNelis: "It was pretty stressful (entering in the fourth inning) with two runners on base.  I got a big out and we got out of the inning with no runs.  I started to get more relaxed in the fifth inning, I was able to attack the hitters and the defense got three big outs."
