Game Recap: Baseball |

No. 14 Baseball’s Late Rally Comes Up Short in Doubleheader Sweep by Lenoir-Rhyne

No. 14 Goldey-Beacom made things exciting in game two, but its ninth-inning rally was not enough in a doubleheader sweep at Lenoir-Rhyne by scores of 16-6 and 10-9 in Hickory, NC.

The Lightning in game one scored twice in the top of the seventh inning.  Junior Connor Megginson (Harbeson, DE) and sophomore Demetrius Johnson (Glassboro, NJ) each singled with the former scoring on a wild pitch and the latter crossing home on a passed ball.

GBC then tacked on three more runs in the eighth.  Megginson singled through the left side to score junior Mason Maxwell (Newfield, NJ), Johnson drew a bases-loaded walk and sophomore Dalen Griffith (Oxford, PA) notched an infield single that plated sophomore Garrett Musey (Millville, NJ).

Junior Marshall Awtry (Hockessin, DE) lifted a sacrifice fly in the ninth to end the scoring.

Lenoir-Rhyne opened the scoring when Wade Cuda continued his astonishing series, launching a three-run long ball in the last of the third for his fourth home run this weekend.  The margin grew to 7-0 in the fourth with Luis Atliles scoring on a passed ball, Bryce Stober ripping a two-run double and Cuda adding an RBI double.

The Bears made it 13-2 in the seventh with six runs, thanks in large part to David Bell cracking a grand slam.

Megginson went 4-for-4, matching his career best in hits that is one off the school record, with Musey and Griffith getting two hits apiece.

Junior Anthony DiMartino (Sicklerville, NJ) struck out five over four innings for the Lightning and was perfect over the first two frames.

Cuda notched three hits and four RBI with Stober getting three hits for the Bears.  Joshua Lanham struck out eight and permitted just five hits over six scoreless frames.

Down 1-0 entering the second inning of game two, Goldey-Beacom took a 2-1 lead when Maxwell crushed a two-run double.

The Bears in the last of the fourth tacked on five runs for a 6-2 margin.  Anthony Porrino had the key blow with a three-run double.

The Lightning (0-3) then did some yard work with Musey crushing a two-run blast in the top of the fifth for a 6-4 deficit and Awtry hitting a solo shot in the seventh for a one-run game.  But Lenoir-Rhyne got three runs in the last of the seventh for an 8-5 lead, aided by Cuda's RBI double.

It was 10-5 going to the ninth when freshman Cole Fowler (Mantua, NJ), Maxwell and Awtry all walked to load the bases.  Musey then unloaded them by smacking a grand slam to make it a one-run game.  Megginson singled and made his way to third, but was stranded.

Musey notched his second career-multi-homer game, rapped three hits and had a personal-best six RBI.  Awtry closed with two hits.

Austin Edwards struck out eight over five innings, allowing four runs and five hits for the Bears (7-1).  Porrino recorded four RBI and Atilies ended with four hits.

The teams on Sunday will play the finale of their four-game series, beginning at noon.
