No. 14 Baseball Opens Season With 5-0 Loss at Lenoir-Rhyne

No. 14 Goldey-Beacom opened what should be an exciting and memorable 2022 campaign with a 5-0 loss at Lenoir-Rhyne in Hickory, NC.

Playing in its six season and its first game as a nationally ranked team, Goldey-Beacom ran into an LRU squad which was competing in its sixth contest of the year.

Senior Jake Heskett (Derwood, MD) picked up right where he left off his outstanding 2021 campaign for the Lightning.  He tossed seven solid innings, striking out six and allowing just three runs and six hits.  Heskett now has at least six strikeouts in four of his last six outings dating to last season.

It was Heskett's first game since tossing seven no-hit innings to help Goldey-Beacom upend then No. 18 Saint Thomas Aquinas last year during the first NCAA Tournament game in team history.  He now stands at 89 career strikeouts, looking to become the fourth in program history to reach triple figures.

Goldey-Beacom also entered the campaign fourth in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association East Region Preseason Poll and was tabbed to co-share the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference South Division title.  Sophomore Garrett Musey (Millville, NJ) was picked first team preseason all-region with both junior Mason Maxwell (Newfield, NJ) and senior Trevor Jump (Wilmington, DE) tabbed second team.

Lenoir-Rhyne (5-1) got exceptional play from its pitchers, who combined for 15 strikeouts.  Starter Andrew Patrick (2-0) was the biggest culprit with nine, allowing just one hit over six innings.

The Bears got all of their runs off home runs with Wade Cuda blasting three.  He hit a solo shot in the second inning, a solo blast in the sixth and cranked a two-run homer in the eighth.  Drew Yniesta led off the bottom of the fourth inning with a long ball.

The teams continue their four-game series Saturday with a noon doubleheader in Hickory, NC.

Thoughts from Coach Tom Riley:
"We didn't get the result we were looking for, but there was a lot to like about the day.  We battled at the plate and had a lot of opportunities against some really good arms.  I think the play their second baseman made in the third (inning-ending fielder's choice) turned out to be really big.  I thought Jake Heskett was great.  He gave us seven strong innings and kept us in the game. It was great to see Michael Awtry get his feet wet and force a big double-play ball (bottom of the eighth inning).  We had a lot of guys get their first action in Lightning uniforms and I was happy with the approach that guys took to the game.  It's great to play these tight games and we are fired up to see what we happens the rest of the weekend."

Thoughts from Jake Heskett:
"It felt great.  Getting the first start shows the coaches have trust in me to start the season well and give them a good start to keep the game competitive.  I feel almost everything went well.  I had control of all of my pitches and I made big pitches when I needed to.  I got unlucky with a few pitches, but I executed them the way I wanted and the hitter just put good swings on them."
