Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women’s Basketball Hangs On For An 81-75 Victory Over Dominican (NY)

Goldey-Beacom climbed its way to a 27-point lead and survived a furious rally by Dominican (NY) to get an 81-75 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference triumph at the Jones Center in Wilmington, DE.

The first half saw the Lightning display no ill effect from not having played since December 18 at Mercy.  GBC raced to a 43-30 lead by using outstanding passing, great court awareness and solid defense.  The squad shot 45 percent (15-of-33) from the field and limited Dominican to 35 percent (12-of-34) in forcing nine turnovers.

Senior Alanna Speaks (Dover, DE), named last week for a third time this season to the CACC Weekly Honor Roll, scored 17 points in the half with freshman Rory Ciszkowski (Wilmington, DE) adding nine.

This was part of a 22-0 run bridging the second and third quarters that gave the Lightning a seemingly insurmountable 57-30 cushion with 6:21 to go.  Ciszkowski scored nine points in that span with senior Alexis Harrison (Millville, NJ) adding six.

The margin was 72-48 early in the fourth before the Chargers lived up to their nickname with a 26-6 run for a 78-72 contest with 1:22 left.  Kristen Teklits simply could not be stopped with four 3-pointers in that time for her 12 points.

Senior Jhordan Gardner (Swedesboro, NJ) hit once from the line for the Lightning with 55 seconds to go for a 79-72 margin.  Dominican (8-6, 4-1 CACC) continued to rush the ball up the floor and Teklits again provided the offense, canning a 3-pointer with 47 seconds to play for a four-point contest.

Following a GBC turnover, Alexis Suarez missed a 3-pointer for Dominican and junior Janiya Stevens (Ellendale, DE) got the rebound.  But the Lightning (5-8, 2-1) missed twice from the charity stripe with 24 seconds left to keep the visitors in it.

Everyone in the gym held their collective breath when Teklits had an open 3-pointer to further stoke the flame, but she missed and Speaks corralled the rebound that all but ended things.

Harrison closed with 20 points on 9-of-11 shooting to give her 954 career, moving past assistant coach Tanner Turner-Rush (2015-19) for 11th place in team history.  Harrison now has the highest total of anyone in program annals not in quadruple figures.

Speaks closed with 18 points and 11 rebounds for her ninth career double-double and Ciszkowski amassed 17 points to fall one short of her season high.

Teklits was on her game with 22 points and seven 3-pointers, Olivia Levy netted 14 points and Suarez added 13 for the Chargers, who were held to 38 percent shooting (29-of-77) and 3-for-16 on players not named Teklits from 3-point range.

This also was the 99th victory for Bethann Burke, already the winningest coach in program history.

Goldey-Beacom opens 2023 with a CACC South Division game at Chestnut Hill.  Game time in Philadelphia is at 1:00 pm, which precedes the men's contest between the same schools at 3:00 pm.
