Basketball Teams Gets Two Picked for CACC Weekly Awards

11/14/2022 12:00:00 AM

Week one of Goldey-Beacom's 2022-23 basketball campaign began with a victory for each team and a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference award for each with sophomore David Aikens (Absecon, NJ) named the Men's Basketball Player of the Week and senior Alanna Speaks (Dover, DE) picked to the Women's Basketball Weekly Honor Roll.

Aikens averaged 26.0 points over two games on 60 percent shooting (21-of-35) and went 9-for-9 from the foul line.  He scored 29 points in Goldey-Beacom's season opener, shooting 12-of-22 from the floor to go with four rebounds, two assists and two steals vs. No. 14 Bentley.  Aikens the next day poured in 23 points on 9-of-13 shooting with five rebounds and two steals in Goldey-Beacom's 104-96 win at Staten Island.

Aikens transferred from Saint Thomas Aquinas College and looks to continue being a spark plug for a Goldey-Beacom squad that was picked to end third in a competitive CACC South Division.  The Lightning have made the CACC Tournament five straight seasons, one short of the school record (2007-12).

Speaks averaged 13.0 points and 6.5 rebounds over two games.  She had 16 points and seven rebounds in Goldey-Beacom's 82-73 victory Friday over Saint Rose.  Speaks then had 10 points and six rebounds Saturday vs. the District of Columbia.

Speaks has fought her way back from injury to provide a major lift for a squad which the first two games saw 11 players average at least 10 minutes per contest.  The former CACC Rookie of the Year and All-East Region player for women's soccer scored in double figures three times a season ago in playing just eight contests.

Both teams return to action Wednesday on the road.  The women's squad visits Southern Connecticut State for a 5:30 pm game and the men face the District of Columbia in a 7:00 pm contest.
