Volleyball Drops Two to Open the 2021 Campaign



Goldey-Beacom finally was back at it on the volleyball court for the first time in 657 days, but was dealt tough setbacks by scores of 3-0 (13-25, 17-25, 21-25) against West Chester and 3-2 (17-25, 25-20, 24-26, 25-22, 15-7) versus Franklin Pierce in West Chester, PA.
 
Against West Chester, the home side in the opening set recorded a .348 hitting percentage with 10 kills.  The Lightning's defense held the Golden Rams in the second set to just a .184 percentage, but the latter got a .286 percentage with 15 kills in the finale.
 
Junior Shayla Boyce (Somerdale, NJ) notched 10 kills, senior Neyshlian Roman Conception (Toa Baja, PR) recorded 17 digs, Autumn Spendlove (Las Vegas, NV) dished 16 assists and fellow junior Julia Syrdahl (Basking Ridge, NJ) added seven kills.
 
Ellie Fisher had 10 kills, Sarah Polacek notched eight, Mel June recorded 13 digs with Sydney Heffner adding 11 for the Golden Rams (1-0).
 
In the second match, Goldey-Beacom squared things in the second set thanks to a .257 hitting percentage along with a 15-8 kills edge.  Boyce notched four kills in that span with Syrdahl, Roman Concepcion and freshman Piper Nanouski (Ottawa, IL) adding three apiece.
 
The third set saw the Lightning rally from 24-20 down to level things, thanks to Nanouski's three kills.  But the Ravens got kills from Tessa Brandy and Hannah Hillis over the next two points to grab the set.
 
Goldey-Beacom (0-2) got even in the fourth set with a .303 hitting percentage and a 14-13 kills edge, inducing Franklin Pierce into seven errors.
 
But the Ravens (1-0) prevailed in the fifth with a 9-4 kills edge, a .368 percentage and just two errors.
 
Syrdahl ended with 17 kills, Nanouski had 13, Boyce amassed 11, Spendlove recorded 48 assists and 17 digs with Roman Concepcion getting 29 digs.
 
Boyce's 21 kills over the two matches now gives her 759 career, moving her into sixth place in team history.
 
Hannah Hillis had 16 kills and 12 digs, Mariah Robles recorded 16 and 10, Morgan Schmutzler totaled 25 digs with Kennedy Garnhart adding 35 assists for the Ravens.
 
Goldey-Beacom on Saturday returns to West Chester to face Millersville at 10:00 am and Mercyhurst at noon.
