Men’s Soccer Dealt Heartbreaking 2-1 Season-Opening Loss by Bloomsburg

Sporting a lineup featuring six players making their Navy and Vegas Gold debut, Goldey-Beacom gave up two late goals and was handed a tough 2-1 season-opening loss by Bloomfield in Wilmington, DE.

Goldey-Beacom came out strong with its newfound blood to open the 2021 campaign, highlighted in part by junior goalkeeper Pedro Santolaya (Madrid, Spain) making three saves in the opening half of his first game.

The debutantes also had a role in the 40th minute to give GBC a 1-0 lead.  Senior Alejandro Varela (Cali, Colombia), who definitely is not a newcomer, launched a free kick that Patrick Stolze (Obersulm, Germany) headed in close to fellow freshman Alex Alquier (Stockholm, Sweden) and the latter put it home.

The second half was a battle that saw the Huskies chip away and the Lightning stand ground.  But Bloomsburg was awarded a penalty kick in the 80th minute that Olly Whitham buried inside the left post for a 1-1 tie.

Overtime loomed, but the Huskies found a way in the 88th minute.  Whitman sent a long ball into the box that took a deflection and Alex Wilsterman was there to knock in for the winner.

Alquier played great in his debut with two shots and Santolaya amassed four saves for the Lightning (0-1).

Anthony Schlee and Sammy Ames attempted three shots apiece with Nathan Slotnick making two saves for the Huskies (1-0).

Goldey-Beacom on Saturday hits the road to visit Shepherd for a 1:00 pm match.
