Mason Maxwell Picked Second Team ABCA All-Region

6/2/2021 12:00:00 AM

Goldey-Beacom sophomore shortstop Mason Maxwell (Newfield, NJ), who all season has been one of the nation's most preeminent baseball players, was named second team All-East Region by the American Baseball Coaches Association.

A beyond gifted athlete who makes the game seem so simple with his hitting that both is powerful and picturesque and his fielding that both is eye-opening and effortless, Maxwell has made himself a mainstay in the GBC lineup.  He has been Mr. Reliable the entire campaign and that also helped him to be picked second team All-Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference.

Maxwell has done it all the entire campaign and the numbers bear witness.  He is 15th in the country with an .839 slugging percentage, 29th with a .415 batting average, 46th with a .507 on-base percentage, 81st with 11 home runs (first in the CACC), second in the league with 13 doubles, and second with 49 hits.  Maxwell ends the year on a career-best 14-game hitting streak, during which he is batted .421 (24-for-57) with three doubles, a triple, six home runs, 16 RBI and an .825 slugging percentage.

As if the regular season was not enough of a stage for Maxwell to display his talent, the NCAA Tournament provided another venue.  He batted an incredible .588 (10-for-17) during those four games with two doubles, three home runs, six RBI, a .611 on-base percentage and a 1.235 slugging percentage.  He had four hits in Goldey-Beacom's opening-day victory over No. 18 Saint Thomas Aquinas, homered twice in the squad's next game vs. Molloy and then had a three-run homer in the team's finale against Molloy.

Maxwell's 11 home runs this season easily are a school record, his 35 RBI are first, his 49 hits are tied for fourth and his 13 doubles are fourth.

All of this played a massive role in Goldey-Beacom (22-9) competing in the NCAA Tournament for the first time, breaking the school record for most wins, winning the CACC South Division title, going on a pair of eight-game winning streaks and opening 8-0 for the best start in program history.  GBC led the CACC with 37 home runs, a .508 slugging percentage and a 3.76 ERA.

The squad was ranked fourth in the first NCAA East Region poll, outscored its opponents 253-117 and had six players tabbed all-conference with freshman Garrett Musey (Millville, NJ) named CACC Rookie of the Year and Tom Riley tabbed Coach of the Year.

Musey also was picked second team NCBWA All-East Region and Riley was the NCBWA East Region Coach of the Year.

GBC did not stop its production at the NCAA Tournament, where it twice upended No. 18 Saint Thomas Aquinas and ended third in the regional.  The pitching staff also gets a great deal of credit for this, recording a 1.00 ERA over the tournament's first three games.
