Garrett Musey Picked NCBWA East Region Hitter of the Week

5/6/2021 12:00:00 AM

Fresh off another stellar week in which he was picked Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Player and Rookie of the Week, Goldey-Beacom freshman first baseman Garrett Musey (Millville, NJ) was tabbed the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association East Region Hitter of the Week.

Musey batted .478 (11-for-23) over seven games with three doubles, a triple, four home runs and 10 RBI.  He went 3-for-3 in game one Tuesday at Dominican (NY) with a double, triple and a home run.  Musey then had two home runs and three RBI in game two.  He came back with two hits, a home run and three RBI in game one Thursday at U. of the Sciences before rapping two hits with a double in game one Sunday vs. Wilmington.

It truly has been a remarkable run of late for Musey, who has grabbed the reins as the Lightning's first baseman and helped solidly what already is a strong infield.  Over his last 14 games, he batting .500 (23-for-46) with three doubles, a triple, eight home runs and 21 RBI.  Musey has a hit in 11 of those contests and three hits in four of those games.

Musey is 13th in the country with an .855 slugging percentage, 31st with a .528 on-base percentage, 58th with 0.32 home runs per game and 58th with a .406 batting average.  His eight home runs are tied for the school's single-season record, which he shares with sophomore shortstop Mason Maxwell (Newfield, NJ).

"Garrett is a dangerous hitter," head coach Tom Riley said.  "What makes him so special is the maturity he brings to his approach in each at bat.  On top of the offense, Garrett has turned himself into a great defender as well."

All of this has helped propel Goldey-Beacom (20-6, 19-6 CACC) into unprecedented heights for the program.  The squad recently broke the school record for most victories, is ranked fifth in the East Region according to the NCBWA, is first in the league with a .338 batting average, first with 33 home runs, first with a 3.91 ERA and has outscored its opponents 236-98.  It also has enjoyed a pair of eight-game winning streaks, including a program-best 8-0 start.

Goldey-Beacom also finished first in the CACC South Division, one game ahead of Jefferson (18-7), but the league is using a power ranking point total to determine seeding for the conference tournament.  That is expected to be announced Friday.
