Baseball Splits a Pair at Felician

Goldey-Beacom notched a 13-3, five-inning triumph in game two against Felician at rain-deluged Branchburg, NJ in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader, which the visitors began with a tough 4-3, eight-inning loss.

The hits kept on coming for Goldey-Beacom in game two, starting with a four-run second inning to open the scoring.  Freshman Garrett Musey (Millville, NJ) scored on an error, Trent Hearn (Bethel, DE) had a sacrifice fly and fellow junior Jeff Gillis (Hockessin, DE) crushed a two-run single.

Senior Justin Hill (Seaford, DE) had an RBI single in the third before sophomore Mason Maxwell (Newfield, NJ) clubbed a two-run homer in the fourth for a 7-1 contest.  Maxwell now is riding a career-best seven-game hitting streak and has a team-leading 19 extra-base hits this season.

The Lightning then torched the Golden Falcons bullpen with six more runs in the fifth for a 13-1 game.  Senior Cole Collins (Laurel, DE) rocketed a two-run homer, sophomore Marshall Awtry (Hockessin, DE) lined an RBI single, Maxwell scored on a wild pitch and freshman Kyle Walker (Wilmington, DE) lined a two-run double.

Wilmington, DE junior Trevor Jump (5-0) again pitched great, striking out four over five innings.  Walker had three hits with Awtry, Gillis and Hill getting two apiece.

Felician in game one grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second on Joe Curcio's RBI single, but GBC evened things in the third.  Hill had a leadoff single, took second on a single from sophomore Connor Megginson (Harbeson, DE), reached third on a wild pitch and scored on Awtry's sacrifice fly.

The Golden Falcons regained the edge at 2-1 in the fourth on Andrew Florides' run-scoring triple, but the Lightning had an answer in the fifth.  Junior Bryan Bell (Chesapeake City, MD) walked, stole second and freshman pinch-runner Demetrius Johnson (Glassboro, NJ) scored on Maxwell's triple.

GBC in the eighth inning opened a 4-3 lead.  The first extra inning saw Megginson placed on second base, he took third on an error and scored on Musey's sacrifice fly.

But Felician won it in the last of the frame.  Mike Martinez was placed on second and scored on Levis Aguila's double for a tie game.  Aguila reached third on a flyout and scored on Florides' single to right field.

Junior Jake Heskett (Derwood, MD) pitched great in a tough no-decision, striking out seven and allowing just two runs over seven innings.

Florides had two hits and two RBI apiece with Martinez and Shawn Vazquez getting two hits apiece for Felician (17-12, 15-4 CACC).  Dwayne Marshall struck out 10 over six innings, yielding two runs and three hits.

Goldey-Beacom (18-6, 17-6) remains in a virtual tie with Jefferson (18-7) in the CACC South Division, but is ahead by percentage points.  However as we learned today with the release of the softball bracket, the league is implementing a power ranking point total in which the final tabulation will be released at regular season's end.  The regular-season standings and the power-ranking standings for softball were not identical.

Goldey-Beacom ends its regular season Tuesday with a noon doubleheader against Post in Hockessin, DE.
