Game Recap: Baseball |

Megginson and Maxwell “Slam” The Door in Baseball’s Doubleheader Sweep of Post

Sophomores Connor Megginson (Harbeson, DE) and Mason Maxwell (Newfield, NJ) each hit a grand slam to help Goldey-Beacom break the school record for most victories in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference-doubleheader sweep, 13-3 and 13-2, of Post at Doyle Field in Hockessin, DE.

Megginson closed game one with three home runs and eight RBI, both school records.  His grand slam was the second of his career and was part of his career-high-tying four hits.  Maxwell hit his slam in game two, when he homered twice and finished with a career-best five RBI.  He now is on a personal-best nine-game hitting streak, during which he is 12-for-35 with nine RBI.

The Lightning in game one scored three times in the second inning for a 3-2 lead, keyed by a two-run single from junior Jeff Gillis (Hockessin, DE).  Megginson's slam came in the fourth inning before an RBI single from senior Justin Hill (Seaford, DE) for an 8-2 cushion.

Megginson then went deep during a four-run fifth inning before sophomore Marshall Awtry (Hockessin, DE) and Hill each had an RBI single for a 12-3 margin.  Megginson's third blast, which came in the sixth inning, ended the scoring.

Greentown, PA junior Mitch Guerrieri (3-0) again provided a strong performance on the mound, striking out seven over seven innings and permitting just three runs and five hits.  Hill, senior Cole Collins (Laurel, DE) and freshman Kyle Walker (Wilmington, DE) each had two hits.

Evan Wilkinson closed with two hits for the Eagles.

GBC in game two again rallied from a 2-0 deficit and began that in the first on an RBI single from freshman Garrett Musey (Millville, NJ).  Maxwell then gave the home side the lead for good with his slam in the second for a 5-1 margin.

Four more runs for the Lightning in the fourth made it a 9-1 game.  Megginson lifted a sacrifice fly, Maxwell cracked a solo homer and Musey blasted a two-run shot.

Maxwell and Musey are part of a five-way tie for the conference lead with eight home runs, which also is tied for the single-season school record.  Musey is fourth in the league with a .406 batting average.

GBC then got four unearned runs in the fifth to close the scoring on RBI singles from junior Bryan Bell (Chesapeake City, MD), Awtry, Musey and Walker.

Sicklerville, NJ sophomore Anthony DiMartino (4-0) also was a standout on the bump, striking out eight over five innings and permitting just two runs, six hits and one walk.  Maxwell, Musey and Bell all ended the nightcap with three hits.

Eric Galaraza amassed two hits in the finale for Post (2-16, 2-16 CACC).

Goldey-Beacom (20-6, 19-6), ranked fifth in the East Region according to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA), broke its mark of 19 victories set during the 2018 season.  It ends the regular season first in the CACC South Division, one game ahead of Jefferson (18-7).

Goldey-Beacom now waits to see where it will be seeded based on the league's power rating point total.  Please note the regular season for the conference does not end until Thursday, so the bracket may not be released until Friday.
