Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball Falls, 3-2, to Molloy in the NCAA Tournament

Sophomore Mason Maxwell (Newfield, NJ) homered twice and junior Mitch Guerrieri (Greentown, PA) put forth a solid effort on the mound for Goldey-Beacom, which was dealt a 3-2 loss by Molloy at the NCAA Tournament's East Regional in Rindge, NH.

Goldey-Beacom (21-8) drops into the elimination bracket and will face No. 18 Saint Thomas Aquinas on Saturday after 9:30 pm.  The Lightning opened the tournament with a 3-0 victory Thursday over the Spartans.

Maxwell came up in the first inning and continued to do his thing, going opposite field to left for a home run and a 1-0 GBC lead to bump his hitting streak to 12 games.

Goldey-Beacom took its run of not allowing a run in the tournament into the fifth inning today, but that ended after 13 1/3 overall frames.  Garrett Scavelli got a leadoff single, took second on Patrick Hoffman's sacrifice and scored when David Franchi lined an RBI double for a 1-1 tie.

The Lions then took their first lead of the contest, 2-1, in the top of the eighth.  Sean Hogan stroked a leadoff single and reached second on Matt Overton's groundout.  Thomas Brady then hit one up the middle that ricocheted into right field, allowing Hogan to score.

Molloy then got a mammoth insurance marker in the top of the ninth.  Franchi got a leadoff single, took second on a passed ball and reached third on James Messina's groundout.  Peter Theodorellis was asked to come through and did, lifting a sacrifice fly to left for a 3-1 margin.

Maxwell kept things interesting in the ninth by hitting a leadoff homer for his 10th long ball of the season to extend his own school record, his third multi-homer game of the year and his team-high 24th extra-base hit of the campaign.  However, the Lightning were retired after that.

Guerrieri pitched great for the Lightning in a tough no-decision, striking out two and permitting just a run and five hits over 6 2/3 innings.  It was the fourth time this season he worked into the seventh inning.

Maxwell ended with three hits, giving him a team-best five games with at least that total.

Charlie Cucchiara fired a complete game for the Lions (23-9), striking out eight and yielding just two runs and five hits.
