Baseball Tops No. 18 Saint Thomas Aquinas, 2-1, in the NCAA Tournament

Freshman Garrett Musey (Millville, NJ) hit a two-run homer and Goldey-Beacom's pitchers had the hitters from No. 18 Saint Thomas Aquinas baffled in the squad's 2-1 victory during the NCAA Tournament's East Regional in Rindge, NH.

In a victory that was not secured until after 1:00 am, GBC (22-8) advances to play Molloy on Sunday at 2:00 pm with the winner facing No. 14 Southern New Hampshire in the championship round.  Please check Twitter at @GBCLightning for any potential schedule changes.

Goldey-Beacom made early noise in the last of the first inning for a 2-0 lead.  Sophomore Mason Maxwell (Newfield, NJ), now the owner of a career-best 13-game hitting streak, ripped a one-out single and then Musey stepped to the plate with two outs.  The Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Rookie of the Year, first team all-league pick and second team all-region selection left no doubt with a two-run homer for his ninth long ball of the season.

The Spartans got one back in the fourth when Gregory DiGiaro lined an RBI single to left field for a 2-1 deficit.

Senior Bailey Spence (Newark, DE) gave the Lightning a spectacular effort by recording a career-best eight strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings, allowing just one run and three hits.  He notched at least five strikeouts in each of his four starts this season with all going at least five innings.

Junior Trevor Jump (Wilmington, DE) did more than a solid job in relief, striking out seven over 3 1/3 scoreless innings and allowing just two hits for the save.

The 15 strikeouts ties the school record first accomplished against Caldwell on March 30, 2019.

It was Goldey-Beacom's second victory over STAC this week after notching a 3-0 triumph Thursday to open the regional.
