Game Recap: Baseball |

Jake Heskett Dominates on the Mound in Baseball's 3-0 NCAA Tournament Win over No. 18 Saint Thomas Aquinas

(Tournament Central)

Jake Heskett (Derwood, MD) did not allow a hit over seven innings and fellow junior Bryan Bell (Chesapeake City, MD) drove home the first two runs for Goldey-Beacom, which opened the NCAA Tournament's East Regional with a 2-0 victory over No. 18 Saint Thomas Aquinas in Rindge, NH.

Goldey-Beacom on Friday will face the winner of Thursday's second game, which pits Molloy against Franklin Pierce.  That game Friday will take place at 7:00 pm.

Heskett was in total control on the mound, striking out four and never giving the Spartans' hitters a chance.  It was his third straight start in which he went seven innings and did not permit more than two runs in any.

Heskett once set down the side in order and was never in trouble at any point.  He did get some huge defensive help from Bell, who made a great sliding catch in left field off a hard-hit ball from Brian Donnelly in the sixth inning.

Goldey-Beacom's patience paid off in the top of the fourth inning.  Junior Trent Hearn (Bethel, DE) lined a two-out single, senior Ivan Solis (La Chorrera, Panama) walked and both advanced on a balk from Alex Mack.  Bell then blooped a double inside the right-field foul line to score both for a 2-0 lead.

The Lightning then made it 3-0 in the top of the ninth.  Bell had a leadoff single, was sacrificed to second by Connor Megginson (Harbeson, DE) and scored when fellow sophomore Mason Maxwell (Newfield, NJ) roped a single to right field.

Maxwell continued his torrid play with his team-leading third four-hit game of the season and now is riding an 11-game hitting streak.  The school record of 16 was set two seasons ago by Brandon Abdul.

Goldey-Beacom (21-7) entered this game as the number four seed in the East Region and extended its school record for most victories in a season.  The Lightning now have outscored their opponents this season, 245-107.

Saint Thomas Aquinas (25-6) is the regional's number two seed.
