Baseball Gains Split From Wilmington to Remain Atop the CACC South Division

Goldey-Beacom opened its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader against Wilmington (DE) with a 9-2 victory before coming up short in game two, 5-1, at Doyle Field in Hockessin, DE.

The Lightning in the first inning of game one got all the runs they would need when sophomore Marshall Awtry (Hockessin, DE) crushed a three-run homer for his sixth long ball of the season.  GBC made it 5-1 in the second on an RBI from freshman Kyle Walker (Wilmington, DE) and Awtry's sacrifice fly.

Junior Trent Hearn (Bethel, DE) added a run-scoring single in the third as part of a two-run inning for a 7-1 margin.  Senior Ivan Solis (La Chorrera, Panama) lined an RBI single in the fourth and Walker added a run-scoring double in the fifth for a 9-1 contest.

Walker and Hearn closed with three hits apiece and Awtry had four RBI.  Newark, DE senior Bailey Spence (2-0) pitched great over seven innings, striking out five and allowing just an unearned run.

Ryan Speed, Adrian Jimenez and Joey Cautillo each had two hits for the Wildcats.

Game two was Wilmington's turn to open the scoring with a long ball as Quintin Ivy hit a two-run blast in the third.  He then added an RBI single in the fifth for a three-run margin and Nic Hertzfeld lined a two-run single in the seventh for a 5-0 contest.

Goldey-Beacom closed the scoring in the last of the seventh on Hearn's RBI single.

Tyler Campbell (1-0) struck out seven over five innings for the Wildcats, allowing just two hits and one walk.  Ivy closed 3-for-3 with three RBI.

Goldey-Beacom (17-5, 16-5 CACC) remains in first place in the CACC South Division by percentage points over Jefferson (18-7).  Wilmington (14-7) sits third.

Goldey-Beacom on Monday plays Felician in a battle of first-place teams.  The doubleheader at Raritan Valley Community College in Branchburg, NJ starts at 1:00 pm.
