Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball Splits a Twin-Bill with Caldwell

Goldey-Beacom rolled to a 13-0 victory over Caldwell in game one of its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader before its undefeated run ended with a 2-1, eight-inning loss in the nightcap at Doyle Field in Hockessin, DE.

Marshall Awtry (Hockessin, DE) got things going in the first inning of game one with a two-run homer before fellow sophomore Mason Maxwell (Newfield, NJ) got a two-run double in the second for a 4-0 lead.  The Lightning then got five more runs in the third for a 9-0 lead, aided by a two-run single from sophomore Connor Megginson (Harbeson, DE).

It was more than enough for Wilmington, DE freshman Justin Jump (1-0), who pitched solidly in earning his first collegiate victory.  He struck out nine to tie a team season high, allowing only four hits and two walks over seven innings in facing just six batters above the minimum.

Awtry rapped three hits with Maxwell and senior Ivan Solis (La Chorrera, Panama) getting two apiece.  Megginson, Maxwell. Awtry and freshman Kyle Walker (Wilmington, DE) each had two RBI.

Game two was a battle with the Lightning grabbing a 1-0 lead in the second, thanks to an RBI single from junior Bryan Bell (Chesapeake City, MD).  But the Cougars leveled things in the sixth when Jalen March lifted a sacrifice fly to play Dhillon Barbetti.

Caldwell took the lead, 2-1, in the first extra inning.  Frank Lehmann was placed on second per international rules and scored when Barbetti's sacrifice bunt was thrown away for an error.

Goldey-Beacom (8-1, 7-1 CACC) had its turn in the last of the frame, but Logan Spakowski retired the side in order to end things.

March had two hits and Spakowski (1-0) struck out three over two innings for the Cougars (7-9, 5-7).

Freshman Luke Taylor (Souderton, PA) pitched four strong innings with a no-decision for the Lightning, striking out four and allowing just two hits.

Maxwell now has seven doubles on the season, which already is tied for ninth on the school's single-season list.  His 15 career doubles puts him tied for fifth on the program's career annals.

Goldey-Beacom hits the road Tuesday to visit Jefferson for a 2:00 pm contest in East Falls.
