Baseball Dealt Heartbreaking 8-7 Loss at Jefferson

Goldey-Beacom rallied to even the contest in the ninth inning, only to be dealt a tough 8-7 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference loss by Jefferson in Philadelphia, PA.

Goldey-Beacom in the opening frame relied on the red-hot sophomore Mason Maxwell (Newfield, NJ), who clubbed a solo home run to left-center field that opened the scoring.

Jefferson got one back in the second on an RBI single from Arturo Figueroa and then grabbed a 2-1 lead in the third when Ryan Coyle crossed home on a wild pitch.

But the Lightning fought back with two runs in the fourth for a 3-2 lead.  Freshman Garrett Musey (Millville, NJ) reached on a one-out error, took second on another error allowing Jeff Gillis (Hockessin, DE) to reach first and both scored on a two-run double from fellow junior Trent Hearn (Bethel, DE).

Goldey-Beacom made it a 5-2 contest in the top of the seventh when Maxwell did his thing again, blasting a two-run homer for his first multi-home run contest.  Jefferson got one back in the last of the frame when Efrain Santiago lifted a sacrifice fly.

But the Rams seemingly broke the Lightning's hearts with four runs in the eighth for a 7-5 lead.  Alex Gonzalez crushed a two-run triple to the base of the right-center-field wall for a 5-5 stalemate.  Two batters later, Richard Joa drilled a two-out, two-run homer for his second hit of the contest.

However, GBC fought back.  Maxwell and senior Ivan Solis (La Chorrera, Panama) each drew walks, both advanced 90 feet on a wild pitch and freshman Kyle Walker (Wilmington, DE) came up huge with a clutch two-run single for a 7-7 tie.

But Jefferson lowered the curtain in the ninth inning.  Santiago drew a leadoff walk, stole second and scored when Zack Austin lined a single up the middle.

Maxwell simply has been on fire and continued that today with his three RBI equaling a personal best and his four hits matching his effort from game one last Friday against Nyack.  He ended 4-for-4 for the second time this year and now has a hit in seven of the squad's 10 games this season.

Walker and sophomore Connor Megginson (Harbeson, DE) each had two hits for the Lightning (8-2, 7-2 CACC).  Wilmington, DE junior Trevor Jump had another solid outing in a no-decision, striking out eight over 6 1/3 innings and permitting just three runs – two earned – with five hits.

Mike Dellapolla struck out four over six innings in a no-decision for the Rams (14-7, 11-4).

Goldey-Beacom is back on the road Wednesday to visit Dominican (NY) for a 2:00 pm doubleheader in Pomona, NY.
