Baseball Rolls to 13-3 Win Over Nyack

Goldey-Beacom jumped on Nyack early and had several solid performances in a 13-3 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory at Doyle Field in Hockessin, DE.

Sophomore Mason Maxwell (Newfield, NJ) got things going for the Lightning with a two-run homer in the first inning, his fourth career long ball.  Junior Bryan Bell (Chesapeake City, MD) lined an RBI double in the third and freshman Demetrius Johnson (Glassboro, NJ) added a run-scoring single later in the frame for a 4-1 lead.

Sophomore Marshall Awtry (Hockessin, DE) keyed a three-run fourth with a two-run double before the Lightning (5-0, 4-0 CACC) got four more in the fifth for an 11-1 lead.  Sophomore Connor Megginson (Harbeson, DE) had an RBI single, Maxwell ripped a run-scoring triple and Awtry added a sacrifice fly.

Megginson had a career-best four hits with Maxwell and Awtry each getting two and three RBI.  Johnson recorded two hits and two RBI with Bell and freshman Dalen Griffith (Oxford, PA) also getting two hits apiece.

Wilmington, DE junior Trevor Jump (3-0) again pitched solidly, striking out eight over five innings.  Senior Carlos Solis (La Chorrera, Panama) struck out two over three innings, allowing just two hits, for his third career save.

Larry Rodriguez, Eric Bittiger and Andrew Brooks all had two hits apiece for the Warriors (0-11, 0-11).  Rodriguez had an RBI double in the fifth.

Goldey-Beacom and Nyack return to Doyle Field on Friday for a noon doubleheader.

Thoughts from Coach Tom Riley
On the team's 5-0 start: "I think that the key is every guy on our roster knows that they are a big part of it.  We have had a lot of contributions from a lot of different guys.  It's a team, the way that the guys act as teammates and the way that they go about their business has been a big key in us playing decent baseball."

On getting off to a great start today: "We like to go out there and try to win innings and try to win at-bats so it is great when we have a good start.  It is great when we have a lot of momentum but we are really focused on staying in the present moment and just having great at-bats and I feel like a lot of our guys had good at-bats today. We had some young guys like Dalen Griffith and Demetrius Johnson getting their first starts and playing really good baseball. Joey Jourdan also got his first start.  We played a good baseball game."

On the challenges of COVID-19 and making sure the team stays focused: "These guys love the game and they love each other. It is really about that.  It is not about what we as coaches do to get them to respond.  They understand that we are in a weird situation, but so is everybody else.  So our guys time after time responded to the challenges and we are really proud of them."
