Baseball Gets Two More Victories Over Chestnut Hill

Goldey-Beacom received solid performances up and down the board in recording another doubleheader sweep, 4-3 and 7-2, of Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference-foe Chestnut Hill in North Wales, PA.

Goldey-Beacom in the first inning of game one grabbed a 1-0 lead when Mason Maxwell (Newfield, NJ) doubled, took third on a wild pitch and scored on a groundout from fellow sophomore Marshall Awtry (Hockessin, DE).  The margin ballooned to 3-0 in the third when sophomore Connor Megginson (Harbeson, DE) launched a sacrifice fly and Maxwell lined an RBI single.

The Griffins in the third scored twice and then added another in the fifth for a 3-3 tie.  Ameir Uzzell drew a two-out walk in the fifth and raced home when Sam Barletta lined a double to center field.

But the Lightning grabbed the lead for good in the seventh.  Junior Jeff Gillis (Hockessin, DE) led off with a double and scored when senior Cole Collins (Laurel, DE) lined a single up the middle.

Collins had three hits to match his career best, ending 3-for-3, with Maxwell and junior Bryan Bell (Chesapeake City, MD) getting two hits apiece.  Carmichaels, PA senior Jake Kinsell (1-0) pitched 4 1/3 solid relief innings for the win, getting a career-best seven strikeouts and allowing just one run and a hit.

Uzzell had two hits for the Griffins.

The Lightning in game two plated two runs in the third for a 2-2 tie, courtesy of Megginson's two-run double.  After junior Trent Hearn (Bethel, DE) tripled to lead off the fourth, Awtry brought him home on a sacrifice fly for a 3-2 lead.

GBC then went off for three in the sixth, making it a 6-2 contest.  Kyle Walker (Wilmington, DE) singled and fellow freshman Garrett Musey (Millville, NJ) doubled before both scored on Hearn's RBI single.  Hearn then crossed home on a wild pitch.

Freshman pinch-runner Demetrius Johnson (Glassboro, NJ) in the seventh inning stole third and scoring on the catcher's throwing error for the final.

Wilmington, DE junior Trevor Jump (2-0) struck out four over five innings, allowing two runs – one earned – and three hits.  His brother Justin Jump (Wilmington, DE) struck out four over the last two frames.

Hearn went 3-for-3 as part of his four-hit doubleheader.

Patrick Meenan had two hits and two RBI for the Griffins (3-7, 0-3 CACC).

Goldey-Beacom (4-0, 3-0 CACC) is off to its best start in team history, recording its first sweep of a CACC opponent in a series of at least three games.

Goldey-Beacom is home next Tuesday for a single game against University of the Sciences, beginning at 2:00 pm.
