Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball Sweeps Chestnut Hill to Open 2021 Campaign

Connor Megginson (Harbeson, DE) singled home the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning of game one and fellow sophomore Anthony DiMartino (Sicklerville, NJ) struck out nine in a complete-game showing for Goldey-Beacom, which began its season with victories of 8-7 and 3-1 over Chestnut Hill in Hockessin, DE.

The first contest was a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game and the second was a non-conference battle.

Down 4-1 entering the last of the sixth inning, GBC rallied for five runs to open a 6-4 lead.  Sophomore Marshall Awtry (Hockessin, DE) had the key blow with a two-run single, senior Justin Hill (Seaford, DE) doubled and Awtry scored on a wild pitch.

The Griffins then got three in the eighth for a 7-6 lead.  Andrew Dietz and Patrick Meenan each had RBI singles with R.J. Huth drawing a bases-loaded walk.

Hill lifted a sacrifice fly in the eighth to tie the game before the Lightning won it in the ninth.  Freshman Garrett Musey (Millville, NJ) had a leadoff single, took second on a wild pitch and reached third on a fielder's choice from junior Trent Hearn (Bethel, DE).  Megginson then roped an RBI single to right field for Goldey-Beacom's first 1-0 CACC start in team history.

Junior Jake Heskett (Derwood, MD) pitched great over six innings for the Lightning, striking out seven and retiring the side in order three consecutive frames.  Wilmington, DE junior Trevor Jump (1-0) got the win, striking out three over two innings.

Megginson, Awtry and Hill all had two hits for GBC (2-0, 1-0 CACC).  Ameri Uzzell closed with three hits for the Griffins (3-5, 0-1).

GBC in game two was down 1-0 going to the last of the fifth before striking for two runs.  Hearn lifted a sacrifice fly to score freshman Kyle Walker (Wilmington, DE), who was fresh off his first collegiate hit, and sophomore Mason Maxwell (Newfield, NJ) lined an RBI double to plate Musey.

The Lightning got an insurance marker in the sixth when Walker lined an RBI double to left-center field, plating senior Ivan Solis (La Chorrera, Panama).

But the story of game two was DiMartino (1-0), who was phenomenal over seven innings for his second career complete game.  He yielded just an unearned run and four hits during that span.

Walker ended with two hits.

Goldey-Beacom's doubleheader for Saturday against Post has been postponed with no makeup date announced.  The squad's next games are Sunday against Chestnut Hill, beginning at noon in North Wales, PA with both being league contests.
