Men's Soccer Gains 4-3 Victory Over Caldwell

Goldey-Beacom battled its way to a 4-3 victory Saturday over Caldwell in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game at Nancy Churchman Sawin Field.

GBC took the lead for good, 4-3, in the 88th minute when freshman Patrick Short (Georgetown, Del.) scored on an assist by sophomore Tumi Sekhampu (Midrand, South Africa).

The Lightning held on to a 2-0 lead in the first half behind a goal from Sekhampu on a cross from junior Eduardo Coimbra (Curitiba, Brazil) in the 28th minute for the 1-0 lead. It was Sekhampu's first goal of the season.

Before the half, freshman Alex Alquier (Stockholm, Sweden) scored on an assist by Coimbra and freshman Johnny Garcia (Georgetown, Del.) for the 2-0 lead in the 43rd minute. Alquier's goal was his third of the season.

In the 50th minute, the Cougars netted one from Thomas Santana on a cross from right assist by Alex Spencer, 2-1. The Lightning however took advantage of a foul that resulted in a penalty kick in the 52nd minute as junior Alejandro Varela (Cali, Colombia) sank one in for the 3-1 advantage. It was Varela's second goal of the season.

The Cougars added two more goals for a 3-3 tie.  Santana scored in the 73rd minute after a foul for a 3-2 game and then tied it in the 80th minute to complete his hat trick off a corner kick from Kevin Avila.

The Lightning continued their attack and Short put home the winner for his second goal of the season.

Junior Pedro Santolaya (Madrid, Spain) recorded two saves for the Lightning.

Goldey-Beacom hosts 10th-ranked Wilmington (DE) University on Tuesday starting at 3:30 PM.
