Baseball Falls Twice to Bloomsburg



Goldey-Beacom was dealt a pair of losses, 9-5 and 5-2, by Bloomsburg in an out-of-conference match up in Hockessin, DE.

In game one, Bloomsburg took the early lead in the top of the first inning when Ben Newbert hit an RBI triple to right field. Cole Swiger followed with a two RBI homer to put Bloomsburg up 3-0.

Goldey-Beacom answered in the bottom of the first inning when senior Ivan Solis (La Chorrera, Panama) scored off a passed ball. Senior Brian McCourt (Huntingtown, Md.) then reached on an error by the third baseman which allowed for sophomore Marshall Awtry (Hockessin, Del.) to score. 

The Lightning went on to tie the game 3-3 in the bottom of the second inning when Solis hit an RBI single to right field. 

The Huskies regained the lead at the top of the third inning when Anthony Holmes hit a two RBI double down the right-field line. Bloomsburg added two more runs in the top of the fourth inning for a 7-3 lead.

Goldey-Beacom continued to battle in the bottom of the sixth inning when senior Justin Hill (Seaford, Del.) hit a home run to make it a 7-4 game. Bloomsburg went on to win game one 9-5. 

Solis had three hits and one run, Hill had two hits and one run and senior Tevin Thomas (Dover, Del.), junior Trent Hearn (Bethel, Del.) and senior Cole Collins (Laurel, Del.) each had one hit for the Lightning.

Newbert had three hits and two runs and Swiger had two hits and two runs for Bloomsburg. 

Senior Bailey Spence (Newark, Del.) (2-2) had one strike out and gave up eight hits and seven runs. 

Nick Stoner (3-0) had six strike outs and gave up seven hits and four runs. 

In game two, Bloomsburg carried their momentum from game one to take an early 1-0 lead when Newbert hit a home run in the top of the first inning. 

Both teams continually fought and the Lightning tied the game 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning when sophomore Mason Maxwell (Newfield, N.J.) scored.

The Lightning and Huskies battled until Bloomsburg took off in the top of the seventh inning to score four runs giving them a 5-1 lead. 

Goldey-Beacom did not give up adding one run in the bottom of the seventh inning but Bloomsburg took game two 5-2.

McCourt had two hits and one run and Solis and Maxwell each had one hit for the Lightning in game two.

Holmes had two hits and one for Bloomsburg in game two. 

Junior Mitch Guerrieri (Greentown, Pa.) (0-3) had three strike outs and gave up six hits and five runs for Goldey-Beacom. 

Goldey-Beacom is back in action on Wednesday for an out of conference doubleheader against Le Moyne at noon in Hockessin, DE.
