Baseball Falls Twice to Bloomsburg

Goldey-Beacom opened its four-game series Saturday against Bloomsburg by falling twice, 7-4 and 12-3, at Doyle Field in Hockessin, DE.

The Lightning in the last of the third inning in game one rapped a trio of solo homers.  Mason Maxwell (Newfield, NJ), fellow sophomore Marshall Awtry (Hockessin, DE) and senior Brian McCourt (Huntingtown, MD) all went deep to extend Goldey-Beacom's lead to 4-0.

The Huskies moved to 4-3 in the top of the fifth.  Cole Swiger homered to left-center field and Ben Newbert lined a two-run double.

Bloomsburg in the seventh still was down one and just two outs from defeat, but got some clutch help.  Gianni Sinatore, who had come into the game as a pinch-runner in the sixth, lined a three-run double to right that gave his side a 6-4 lead.

Swiger added a sacrifice fly later in the frame for the final.

McCourt and senior Cole Collins (Laurel, DE) ended with two hits apiece for the Lightning (6-8).  Junior Jake Heskett (Derwood, MD) pitched solidly over the first five innings, striking out four and allowing just three runs and six hits.

Jared Marshman got the victory, striking out three and yielding just two hits over two scoreless frames for Bloomsburg.

The Huskies in game two plated eight runs for a 12-1 lead, keyed by Newbert's grand slam.  Swiger, Kyle Ofier and Carter Chasanov also had RBI hits in the frame.

Junior Bryan Bell (Chesapeake City, MD) roped an RBI double in the second, McCourt had a run-scoring double in the seventh and freshman Garrett Musey (Millville, NJ) added an RBI groundout later in the frame for the Lightning's runs.

Awtry closed with two hits for a team-best third time this season and is riding a five-game hitting streak, one short of a personal best.

Chasanov recorded two hits and three RBI with Ofier getting two and two for Bloomsburg (7-1).  JJ Spehrley simply was spectacular, striking out eight over five innings and allowing just a run and three hits.

These teams on Sunday are back at it with another noon doubleheader at Doyle Field.
