Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball Gains a Split With No. 10 Millersville

Goldey-Beacom put forth a more than impressive showing in game one against 10th-ranked Millersville with a 7-1 victory before it was handed a 12-3 loss in the nightcap at Doyle Field in Hockessin, DE.

The Lightning in the first inning of game one grabbed a 2-0 lead on a two-run single from senior Brian McCourt (Huntingtown, MD).  The margin grew to 4-0 in the second with junior Jeff Gillis (Hockessin, DE) getting an RBI single and senior Tevin Thomas (Dover, DE) lifting a sacrifice fly.

Millersville got one back in the fifth on Jimmy Losh's RBI single for a 4-1 margin, but GBC answered in the bottom of the frame.  Senior Ivan Solis (La Chorrera, Panama) and sophomore Marshall Awtry (Hockessin, DE) each drew bases-loaded walks and sophomore Mason Maxwell (Newfield, NJ) scored on a wild pitch.

Junior Jake Heskett (Derwood, MD) again pitched great, striking out five and allowing just one run and three hits over five innings.  McCourt and Maxwell had two hits apiece.

Losh ended with two hits for the Marauders (8-3).

Millersville in the second game plated five runs in the top of the first, helped in part by RBI hits from Darin Miller and Manning Brookens.  Jimmy Cain lined a two-run double in the fourth to make it 8-1.

Awtry had an RBI single in the fifth and junior Bryan Bell (Chesapeake City, MD) followed suit in the sixth for the Lightning (6-4).

Junior Trent Hearn (Bethel, DE) ended game two with a pair of hits for Goldey-Beacom.

Cain finished with four RBI and Gavilan Fogarty-Harnish got the win for the Marauders, striking out five over six innings and allowing three runs – two earned – and seven hits.

The second game was called in the top of the seventh inning due to darkness.  Because the inning did not decide which team won the game, all statistics in the inning count.

These teams Sunday play another doubleheader, this time at Millersville beginning at noon.
