Baseball Splits Two Contests in North Carolina

Goldey-Beacom opened the day with an 8-3 loss to Tiffin before rallying for a 7-3 triumph over Clarion in Cary, NC.

GBC in the last of the second inning against Tiffin opened the scoring with two runs, aided by RBI from junior Trent Hearn (Bethel, DE) and senior Brian McCourt (Huntingtown, MD).  That margin grew to 3-0 in the fourth when senior Cole Collins (Laurel, DE) had a leadoff single and later scored on a groundout from sophomore Marshall Awtry (Hockessin, DE).

But Tiffin took over from there with four runs in the fifth inning, keyed by a two-run triple from Cody Orr, and four runs over the last three frames.

Collins and sophomore Mason Maxwell (Newfield, NJ) each reached base twice for the Lightning.  Junior Jake Heskett (Derwood, MD) tossed the first five innings and senior Jake Kinsell (Carmichaels, PA) recorded four strikeouts over 2 2/3 frames.

Against Clarion, Awtry had an RBI double in the top of the sixth to give GBC a 3-2 lead.  That margin became 5-3 in the seventh when senior Justin Hill (Seaford, DE) cracked a two-run homer.

Junior Bryan Bell (Chesapeake City, MD) gave the Lightning much-needed insurance in the eighth when he lined an RBI double and senior Ivan Solis (La Chorrera, Panama) added a run-scoring single for the final.

Junior Trevor Jump (Wilmington, DE) pitched five solid innings to start and freshman Luke Taylor (Souderton, PA) came on in relief.

These games are being played at the United States Training Complex, home of the NCAA Division II College World Series.

Goldey-Beacom on Sunday is scheduled to face Frostburg State at 10:00 am to close the trip.
