Baseball Splits a Pair at Limestone

Goldey-Beacom split a pair against Limestone by grabbing its third win in Gaffney, SC. The Lightning took game one 11-1 and fell 4-3 in a tough 12-inning battle.
 
In game one, Goldey-Beacom took an early 5-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Senior Tevin Thomas (Dover, Del.) hit a two-run single to left field, senior Cole Collins (Laurel, Del.) hit an RBI single to left field that scored Thomas after a throwing error by the left fielder and sophomore Mason Maxwell (Newfield, N.J.) hit a two-run single through the right side.
 
The Lightning added another run at the top of the second inning when Ivan Solis (La Chorrera, Panama) hit a single RBI single to right center field to give Goldey-Beacom a 6-0 lead. Limestone continued to fight adding a run in the bottom of the second inning when Kyle Strovink hit a single RBI sacrifice fly to right field.

Goldey-Beacom kept it rolling adding another run in the top of the third inning to increase its lead to 7-1 when junior Trent Hearn (Bethel, Del.) hit a sacrifice fly to left field but they did not stop there.
 
In the top of the fifth inning the Lightning add three more runs giving them a nine-point lead. Marshall Awtry (Hockessin, Del.) scored off a wild pitch and Thomas hit a two-run RBI single to left field.
 
Senior Brian McCourt (Huntingtown, Md.) had two hits and three runs, Thomas amassed three hits, a run, and four RBI with Awtry getting two hits and two runs for the Lightning.
 
Benjamin Huber had two hits and a run, and Matt Hilderbrandt and Tyler O'Dell each had one hit for Limestone.
 
In game two, Goldey-Beacom kept its momentum rolling from game one taking an early 2-0 lead at the top of the first inning. Sophomore Connor Megginson (Harbeson, Del.) hit an RBI double to left field and freshman Garrett Musey (Millville, N.J.) scored off a fielding error by the third baseman.
 
Despite being down by two, Limestone equalized the game in the bottom of the sixth inning to make the game 2-2. Trace Whetsell scored off a fielder's choice and Hilderbrandt hit a single RBI double to right field to make the game 2-2 going into the seventh inning.
 
The score remained 2-2 through seven innings sending the game to extra innings. Both teams continued to fight to gain the lead. The Lightning struck first in the 12th inning when Solis scored off a throwing error by the shortstop for a 3-2 lead.
 
Limestone responded when Whetsell hit a two-out, two-run single through the left side to give Limestone a 4-3 lead to win the game. This was the first time all weekend that Goldey-Beacom trailed and this game ties the second-longest in team history.
 
Solis had three hits and two runs, Jeff Gillis (Hockessin, Del.) recorded two hits with McCourt, Justin Hill (Seaford, Del.), Megginson and Bryan Bell (Chesapeake City, Md.) all getting a hit each for the Lightning.
 
Whetsell had two hits, one run and two RBI with O'Dell adding two hits and one run for Limestone.
 
Goldey-Beacom is back in action on Friday, February 21 against Tiffin at 1pm in Cary, NC.
