Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men’s Soccer Wins its Third Straight, 5-1 Over Nyack

Goldey-Beacom remained unbeaten and untied in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference with a three-goal second half that led to a 5-1 victory over Nyack at Nancy Churchman Field in Wilmington, DE.

Goldey-Beacom in the first half established momentum and the tempo with a 2-0 lead, thanks to a 9-6 shots edge.  Sophomore Luis Martins (Curitiba, Brazil) in the 33rd minute scored off a feed from Ethan Maguire (Sydney, Australia) and fellow junior Alejandro Varela (Cali, Colombia) in the 36th minute found the back of the net off passes from senior Levi Maruca (Downingtown, PA) and sophomore Josh Moody (Townsend, DE).

The second half saw the pace slow with the next goal tough to come by.  But the Lightning changed that when senior Nicolas Jaramillo (Cali, Colombia) took a corner kick and it ricocheted in off a Warrior defender in the 71st minute for an own goal and a 3-0 margin.

Goldey-Beacom then put away the contest in the 74th minute when Maguire netted a 30-yard shot off a pass from senior Jamie McAvoy (Ayr, Scotland) for a 4-0 margin.  Mitchell Reed scored off Paul Montufar's assist in the 80th minute for Nyack before Varela completed his second career brace on a 20-yard free kick with 51 seconds left.

Varela's first brace ironically came against Nyack on October 7, 2017.  He now has three goals this season and nine career.

Varela and sophomore Eduardo Coimbra (Curitiba, Brazil) attempted four shots each and freshman Troy Fitzgerald (Bear, DE) amassed five saves for the Lightning (5-3, 3-0 CACC), who finished with a 16-13 shots edge.

Javier Fernandez had four shots and Jose Perez made four saves for the Warriors (0-5-2, 0-3).

This marks the second time in four years the Lightning have opened 3-0 in league play.  GBC now is 7-0-1 against Nyack in the teams' last eight encounters.

Goldey-Beacom next Wednesday steps out of league play to face Molloy.  First kick in Rockville Centre, NY is at 7:00 pm.
