Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men’s Soccer Opens League Play With 2-1 Victory at Caldwell

Goldey-Beacom overcame an early deficit and then a shorthanded Caldwell squad, beginning its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference slate with a 2-1 victory in Caldwell, NJ.

The usual battle between the Lightning and Cougars produced 18 first-half fouls and an early marker for the home side.  Andre Vieira got the ball and benefitted from a deflection as he shot it into the net in the 10th minute for a 1-0 Caldwell lead.

Goldey-Beacom then got a huge break when Caldwell was assessed a red card in the 12th minute, giving the visitors a man up for the remaining 78 minutes.  After great patience, the Lightning in the 36th minute leveled the match when a shot from sophomore Josh Moody (Townsend, DE) rang off the post and in for his second goal of the season and third career.

The Lightning came out firing in the second half and needed just under three minutes for the game's final tally.  Juniors Alejandro Varela (Cali, Colombia) and Ethan Maguire (Sydney, Australia) were the helpers as junior Sergi Varona (Barcelona, Spain) scored for his first career goal.

Moody and senior Levi Maruca (Downingtown, PA) recorded three shots apiece and junior Cole Lewis (Middletown, DE) made two saves for the Lightning (3-3, 1-0 CACC), who notched the fifth victory in their last six meetings with the Cougars.

Vieira recorded five shots and Nils Svere amassed six saves for Caldwell (0-5, 0-1).

Goldey-Beacom is home Tuesday against Chestnut Hill for a 4:15 pm match.
