Volleyball Gains a Split at the Kutztown Classic



Goldey-Beacom put forth a strong performance in getting a 3-0 victory (25-20, 26-24, 25-14) over Salem after beginning play at the Kutztown Classic with a 3-0 setback to Notre Dame (OH) (13-25, 20-25, 12-25) in Kutztown, PA.
 
Versus Salem, Goldey-Beacom grabbed the opening set by limiting Salem to just a .143 hitting percentage.  Julia Syrdahl (Basking Ridge, NJ) pounded five kills, fellow sophomore Autumn Spendlove (Las Vegas, NV) dished nine assists and junior Neyshlian Roman Concepcion (Toa Baja, PR) added six digs.
 
The second set witnessed the Lightning owning an 18-10 kills edge, allowing just a .156 percentage and rallying from a 22-18 scoreboard deficit.  Sophomore Shayla Boyce (Somerdale, NJ) could not be stopped in the set with nine kills and Spendlove also continued her solid play with 15 assists.
 
The momentum squarely was on Goldey-Beacom's side and that did not wane in the third set.  Boyce totaled four kills in the stanza and the defense once again was on full display, holding Salem to a -.032 percentage.
 
Boyce ended with 16 kills, junior Lindsay Przywara (Williamstown, NJ) recorded 10 and 12 digs, Syrdahl notched 10 kills, Spendlove closed with 34 assists and Roman Concepcion had 13 digs for the Lightning (2-4), who owned a 42-30 kills advantage.
 
Jalavia Johnson notched seven kills and 11 digs, Alaina Weltz recorded 21 assists and Liane Moser recorded 15 digs for the Tigers (0-8).
 
Against Notre Dame (OH), Goldey-Beacom came up on the wrong end of a 43-23 kills line and fell victim to a .371 hitting percentage.  The Falcons (5-1) recorded a .464 percentage in the third set with 15 kills.
 
Przywara ended with 11 kills, Spendlove amassed 19 assists with Roman Concepcion recording 13 digs for the Lightning.
 
Mary Kate McHugh notched 11 kills, Blaire Barr had 10, Paige Staudacher recorded 35 assists and Alexandra Kaeberlein amassed 21 digs for Notre Dame (OH).
 
Goldey-Beacom on Saturday plays on day two of the Kutztown Classic against Saint Michael's after 2:00 pm and Kutztown after 6:00 pm.
